How are you feeling today? Are you feeling musical? Or, on the other hand, are you feeling a little down and in need of some good music to lift your spirits?
Here in Portugal, the country continues to be battered by bad weather. Last week, we had Storm Kristine, which devastated much of the interior and coastline of the central region of the country. Hundreds of thousands of homes were left without electricity and water, and many of them, as well as businesses in the region, were destroyed. Roofs were destroyed, and communication channels were cut off.
It is a period of recovery for many people in the region, and another storm is forecast for tomorrow evening and the weekend... This one is called Leonardo. It will bring heavy rain and wind, although not as severe as the previous one. However, the land is already saturated with water, and the dams, which are currently at almost maximum capacity, will have to release water for safety reasons, which will lead to the normal and predictable increase in the flow of watercourses, with predictable flooding. I hope that everything will be under control and that we will be able to respond to this challenge as a population.
But I'll stop talking about the less positive things and leave you with a brief musical note. Today, February 3, we are celebrating another year of life for bassist Arthur Kane. Arthur Harold Kane Jr., as he is known, was born 55 years ago in The Bronx, New York City. The story goes that Kane was so close to his mother and aunt, and since his aunt was an Elvis fan, the artist's first word as a child was “record”!
Kane was part of one of the most iconic bands formed in the United States. Named “New York Dolls,” the New York rock band formed in 1971 had vocalist David Johansen as its main lineup, Johnny Thunders on guitar, Sylvain Sylvain as guitarist and pianist, Jerry Nolan on percussion, and our birthday boy Kane as bassist.
I chose three of the band's most iconic songs, and I confess that I even knew one of them, but I didn't know it was theirs!

Como é que se sentem hoje? Sentem-se musicais? Ou por outro lado, sentem-se mais abatidos, e estão a precisar de ouvir boa música para subirem o espírito?
Aqui por Portugal, o território continua a ser fustigado pelo mau tempo. Na passada semana, tivemos a tempestade Kristine, que veio devastar grande parte do interior e litoral da zona centro do país. Centenas de milhares de casas ficaram sem electricidade, e sem água, e muitas delas, assim como empresas da região ficaram destruídas. Telhados destruídos, e meios de comunicação inexistentes.
O período é de recuperação, para muitas das pessoas da região, e já para a noite de amanhã e até ao fim de semana, está prevista outra depressão... Esta chamada de Leonardo. Vai trazer chuva intensa e vento, apesar de não ser com a mesma gravidade da precedcente, acontece que os terrenos já estão muito saturados com água, e as barragens que neste momento se encontram nas suas quotas quase máximas, terão que fazer descargas de segurança, o que vai implicar com o normal e previsível aumento do caudal dos curso de água, com inundações previsíveis. Espero que tudo seja controlado, e que sejamos capazes de responder a mais este desafio como população.
Mas vou deixar de falar das coisas menos positivas, e vou aqui deixar uma breve nota musical. Hoje, dia 3 de fevereiro, estamos a comemorar mais um ano de vida do baixista Arthur Kane. Arthur Harold Kane Jr., como é conhecido, nasceu há 55 anos em The Bronx, na cidade de Nova Iorque. Reza a história que Kane, era tão próximo da sua mãe e tia, e sendo ela a sua tia uma fã do Elvis, que a primeira palavra do artista em criança foi mesmo "record"!
Kane fez parte de uma das bandas mais emblemáticas formadas nos Estados Unidos. De nome "New York Dolls" a banda de rock, nova-iorquina formada em 1971, tinha como alinhamento principal o vocalista David Johansen, Johnny Thunders na guitarra, como guitarrista e pianista contava com Sylvain Sylvain, Jerry Nolan tomava conta das percussões, e o nosso aniversariante do dia Kane, era o baixista.
Escolhi três canções das mais emblemáticas do grupo, e confesso que até conhecia uma delas, mas que não o sabia que era deles!
