How Beautiful Are You?

I vividly remember getting so angry and agitated the first time I listened to this song. This was because I only heard the chorus and so, I started asking questions. Why would he say such a thing about people? Why would Ed Sheeran make peace with the fact that he wasn't beautiful? I mean, who doesn't want to be beautiful.

After my agitation peaked I decided to take a seat and actually listen to the song properly. And as you would imagine, I read an entirely different meaning into the chorus of the song. Talk about judging a book by its cover or in this case, a song by just its chorus.

"Beautiful People" by Ed Sheeran soon became a very wonderful song to listen to each time I got the opportunity. I could relate so we'll with the song because according to the description of 'beautiful people', I wholeheartedly made peace with the fact that I wasn't indeed "beautiful".

For many, who also got the wrong notion on their first hearing, I'd like to briefly make some things clear.

Sheeran in all his glory clearly dissected the stereotype which people have concerning beauty. Sometimes, I sit back to analyze many principles, rules and norms with which the masses are guided by and I realise that every single thing has a stereotype.

A particular way to dress, what house you live in, the places you hang out at, name it. Unfortunately or fortunately for me, I am not one to indulge in many of these stereotypes, which usually lead s to me taking the back seat and just observing.

In this song however, Sheeran made reference to a particular class of people who do everything and anything to be among the " beautiful people". They forget that beauty isn't about flashy cars and conspicuous phones. Don't get me wrong, beautiful cars and advanced phones are great assets if put to good use, however, these things shouldn't determine our beauty.

I listened to a speech from someone a long time ago and in her speech, she said that a beautiful person isn't hard to spot as their beauty usually radiates. Their beauty is shown in their daily activities. She made mention of how easy it was to differentiate between a truly beautiful human and a human who was just beautiful for the cameras. This made a lot of sense.

After an extensive yet concise description of what the majority of the world sees as beautiful, Sheeran said that he wasn't beautiful. This simply means that he saw beauty to be way more than borrowed cars and parties. On this, I certainly agree with him.

I do not know what you perceive beauty to be? Do a particular set of activities or assets determine whether you're beautiful or not? So does this mean that you feel ugly when these things are no longer in sight?

Funny how a good friend of mine has been preaching about vanity since the beginning of this week. But if we're analysing closely, we'd notice that certain things aren't worth dying for as these things will still be in existence till whenever. So why not just take things slowly or better still wait till you're able to comfortably afford them?

On this note, I'd love to end with two questions: How beautiful are you? What do you perceive beauty to be?

Beauty lies within us. That's who we truly are. That is why I agree with you because physical appearance isn't beauty. Our hearts is, our actions towards others, our thoughts, our minds. That's where it all lies.

And I am surely beautiful to a long extent ☺️.

You've said it all. Expensive and flashy materials doesn't make one beautiful but rather whom they really are; the way they roll with others, their attitudes, behavior and all they do.

I do know that I'm beautiful but I won't end there cause I'm striving to be much more beautiful than I am right now 😜.

She is very much correct.I like her definition of what beauty is, we all look at beauty from the perspective of being pretty while ignoring others.

What determines Beauty is not in dress, jewelry, or any adornment. Beauty is a character, anyone with a good character is beautiful.

For me beauty comes from the inside, the kind of heart the person possesses and the the way he/she treats others even strangers. This kind of beauty can't fade away, it only gets more beautiful.
