Echoes of Home|| A Timeless Appeal

Are there songs that just make you want to tear up whenever you listen to them? I'm here to share one of such songs that gets me that way. I'm a sucker for songs from the 70's and the 80's, especially country songs. Although I'm still a youth, I could be described as a retrophile and I have absolutely no problem with that.

My passion for music has taken me on a profound journey of exploration and discovery. It has allowed me to delve into intricate and multifaceted realms. Apparently, I listen to a wide array of songs but my subconscious always has a way of filtering out the most meaningful and thoughtful ones.

About five years ago, I saw the movie "Kingsman; the golden circle" and I was in awe. Everything about the movie screamed perfection and the songs weren't an exception. The end of the movie however was the part that stood out for me the most because that was when I heard and actually paid attention to the song "Take me home, country roads" for the very first time. I did my research immediately after seeing the movie and I was disappointed in myself. For a country music fanatic like myself, I wondered why I didn't come across this masterpiece by John Denver earlier. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right places.

I downloaded the song and listened to it every single time I got the chance to. Along the line, I lost my mobile device and my songs weren't backed up. I forgot about this song until a few months ago when I was randomly discussing with a friend and he kept humming to the song. The feeling of nostalgia enveloped me. It was then that I realised that I had been missing out on this song for a while and so I hurriedly downloaded it back.

Just like the title insinuates, the song is basically about a homesick person or do I say a person who is longing to return home. We all have different paths in life and at some point, we have to step out of our comfort zone; from our homes. Longing to return home is one very inevitable feeling. Some people may claim that they are too caught up with work to even think of getting homesick but who are they really lying to? The world or themselves?

Just for more clarity, home doesn't necessarily mean a structure or a building. Home means so many things to different people. Home could be a person, people, or an environment that makes you feel safe, that sense of belonging. This just reminds me of how many times I missed home when I had to live away from home. I obviously lived in self denial but deep down, I knew that if an offer to take the next available bus home was presented to me, I would outrightly jump on it.

This song in a subtle way portrays hope. It reassures people that someday, sometime, we will get reunited with our home. It may take days, months or even years but in the end, we will return because there is indeed no place like home. So, this song is a subtle reminder to stand strong in hope.

Was there ever a time when you were home sick? I would totally love to hear your experience.

Love, Wongi ✨

Yes. I agree. Home is not just where building is but it is where we are, where we stay.

Just like the movie the willoughbys. I love the movie a lot.

I have definitely felt homesick, and although it is a heartbreaking feeling, I think it has been necessary because it has made me value my home more, both my home as a physical space as well as the people who represent that place where everything is safe. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I had bittersweet memories after reading them!
