A New Look At Life.

For a while now, I lost touch with one of my favourite artists–Jon Bellion. Out of a yearning heart, I decided to listen to him today. When one of his songs "the Internet" came up, I was reminded of the nonchalance and indifference that exists in the world today.

"Life became dangerous, the day we all became famous. No one cares if you have it, just as long as they think you do"

The internet–Jon Bellion.

This line applies to everyone. People no longer need confirmation and closure on certain issues. As long as you say it then they believe. This could be as a result of two things;

First, because people are so occupied with life and everyone is just trying to survive in a cruel world. Or. Second, because people just ask questions to fulfil all righteousness. But then again, with each passing day, people get better at faking their feelings and feigning emotions so no one would truly know what the other person has in mind.

Take for instance, when a person is asked; "How are you?" The default answer given by over 80% of people in the world is "I'm fine". I know many people who would still give this default answer even when they are tied to a railway with no means of moving and there is an incoming train. Such people have already conditioned their minds to the fact that nobody actually cares when in fact this is wrong.

This is why when I ask the "How are you" question and a person gives me the default answer almost immediately, I ask again but this time with a tone that says " it's okay, you can speak up, I am ready to listen". If we had more people who are willing to lend listening ears at any point in time, then the world would be a better place.

This reminds me of an encounter I had with a stranger some time ago. I had stepped out of my apartment to get some air and after about a five minute hike, I reached a spot where moulded chairs were provided for people to sit. In a bid to take in more of nature's goodness, I sat there. Few minutes into my arrival, a young man joined me. From the man's appearance, he looked a bit troubled.

As he sat beside me, I greeted him, he returned my greeting and we both felt silent. I noticed that the man was fidgeting and very unsettled but I didn't want to pry so I kept minding my business. The man tapped me slightly on my shoulder and said;
"Sorry, please do not get offended. Can I talk to you?"

This gesture took me aback for a minute as it had never happened. But then again, I am always ready to listen so I agreed to lend him a listening ear. I sat there for over an hour listening to the young man go on and on about all the things that were bothering him but I kept questioning myself inwardly; why would this man choose to talk to me? I had never seen him in my life. What If I decided to use his woes against him? Of course I wouldn't.

He concluded his rant with the sentence " thank you very much. I really needed someone to talk to". You could literally feel the relief in his voice. Of course it was a pleasure listening to him but after that day, I never came across the man again.

One other reason why people prefer to let their worries engulf them rather than share it with another person is because they are afraid of judgement. Imagine telling a person about the things that trouble you and the person judging you for your actions, whether right or wrong. This has a psychological effect on the person sharing their worries.

We all go through a whole lot and consciously or unconsciously, everyone is fighting their own demons but taking out time to give a friend or even a stranger a listening ear without judging them goes a long way in helping people. This doesn't just help the person in distress but it also helps you who is lending a listening ear. You can decide to try this out, lend a listening ear today and see how two birds are killed with one stone.

With love, wongi ✨

hey @wongi I agree with your Idea that people often do not open up when asked directly, how are you? probably because they don't feel comfortable or that they may get judged. Either way, I believe this is a culture that needs to change. The culture of default saying I am fine even when one is clearly drowning in a difficult situation.

I'm glad we share the same thoughts on this. Again, not everyone is to be trusted fully and opening up may be a little hard .
