Let's talk about... percussion // Winvanity music theory course #2

Hello,

Winvanity from this side.

Before we get started, I wanted to say that the article would not have been written without the support of another person more familiar with the use of drums in songs than I am. So my article today will be supplemented by the tracks of a man hiding on Spotify under the pseudonym Dorito. I will include links to check out his work at the end of the article. Now let's start with the basics.

Why do we need drums?

ㅤThe drums are an indispensable part of most musical genres, from rock and metal to jazz and hip-hop. It is the one that sets the rhythm, the impetus of a song and provides the basis for other instruments. Creating drums is an important process in music making that requires both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Now let's discuss the basic parts of percussion.

Kick

ㅤThe kick is one of the key instruments in the percussion section, as it provides the foundation and stability for the rest of the song. The kick often plays the role of supporting the bass line, which interacts with the chords. In this way, the kick helps maintain the rhythm and harmony of the song, as well as adding fullness and depth to it. The kick is essential for keeping the song on track and giving it strength and character. The interplay of the kick with the chords and rhythm is crucial to creating a harmonious percussion section, which consists of elements that complement each other and together create music.

Clap

ㅤClap is a simple but effective way to add rhythm and emphasis to a piece of music. Clap is often used as an additional percussion element, and takes up space between each kick. In EDM, clap is often used to emphasize accents in the rhythm, helping to encourage listeners to dance. In hip-hop and pop, clap is often used to add energy and a strong rhythm, as well as to mark the climaxes of a song. In rock and lo-fi music, clap can be used to add intensity and power to a drum part. Clap can also be used as a sound texture element that adds space to a song.

Snare

ㅤThe snare drum is one of the most important percussion instruments, whose sound is crucial to the overall piece. The snare drum is often used to emphasize rhythm and also to add texture. Due to its distinctive sound, the snare drum can be used to make complex rhythmic patterns or to add subtlety, while it can also just be an amplification of the claps used.

HiHats

ㅤThe hi-hat closes our pool of basic percussion elements. It can be used to create complex rhythmic patterns and add various accents and rhythmic variations. In addition, the hi-hat can also be used to accentuate accents and create the impression of a continuous wave of sound, which adds energy and intensity to a track. The hi-hat can also be used as an element of sound texture that fills the space in a song. Hi-hat can still be used to create subtle and delicate rhythmic variations, as well as to emphasize the sounds of other instruments in the ensemble.

This is how we got through the four basic percussion sounds used in musical pieces. I'm already saying goodbye to you, we'll see you in the next article, and I encourage you before you leave to check out the rest of Dorito's work. Have a great day! Peace.

I totally agree with your explanations here. Most especially on the kick. I think it is timer for the song. It determines how the others can be applied.
I love sings with drums. Plain chants make me fall asleep, hehe.
Weldone friend, happy Easter
