Inspired by Type O Negative

I remember more than a decade ago, specifically in 2004 when I bought a well-known music magazine called Kerrang, which contained some posters and a compilation disc of some musical themes, and among those themes I really liked one called I Dont Wanna Be Me from the album Life is Killing Me by Type O Negative, being the first time I heard this band and I was enchanted by their music, its melody and harmony. It was like a mixture of goth but with a bit of alternative, and also the characteristic voice of Peter Steele, vocalist and bassist of the band.

I just had that song and listened to it countless times, so I was very anxious to know more about their music, but at that time the internet did not exist as massively as we know it now, and because of that I lived in a camp very isolated from the main cities of the country where I live. So it was quite an obstacle to find music, so I had to buy more magazines with records or go to the city to buy the records I could find.

After a few months my family and I moved to the nearest city for a family visit, and at that time I took the opportunity to look for more Type O Negative music, and as bad luck would have it, none of the record stores had any of those records. However I kept looking, until in a square I could see an improvised shelf with a lot of pirated records but mostly of the metal music that I liked. It was the first time I saw that way of selling pirated discs, but even so I didn't care and as soon as I got to the place I asked the person in charge about Type O Negative, of which I had 3 discs that I could buy.

It was enough with my old Walkman and the discs to spend several weeks those records and every time I felt excited to listen to each track. I felt every second of what seemed to me a very harmonious music with very characteristic features of the band itself. From the instrumental performance, with catchy guitar riffs, the key sound of a synthesizer and the very deep voice of Peter Steele, simply that combination was the perfect formula of a band like Type O Negative.

Undoubtedly, they were very appreciated moments for me being a teenager that every time was excited to know more about music, even if we talk about a band like Type O Negative that had been around since 1989, but due to circumstances of technology in my country or the place where I lived it was very difficult to know about many things in the world.

Many years passed and even more than a decade, and in part I had stopped listening to Type O Negative, maybe because as a music lover one becomes interested in other bands or musical genres, but after I started living with my wife I went back to listen to those old Type O Negative songs, feeling that same emotion when I was younger and even my wife liked it a lot, so much so that it is one of her favorite bands and has had the opportunity to interpret some of their songs, it is a point that we have very much in common and that we share every day of our lives.

So for me Type O Negative is part of the essence of my life, it is the feeling of everything that music can generate, it is that retrospective that we can make of a past full of memories and circumstances that were very significant for my life, that is the magic of music and what can also make some musical genres that create that feeling of euphoria, excitement and even joy.

All of the above is part of my story when I listened to this great band that already exists after the death of Peter Steele, who remained as an icon and source of inspiration for many who seek this type of music as part of their lives.

I know them well, I listened to them ad nauseum as a teenager myself. Apparently Peter Steele wasn't a very nice person and I've been told he was the happiest version of himself when he was working as a school janitor. Perhaps he didn't feel the need to be seen and just wanted to be left alone.

As for their tracks, gosh I can remember writing about them in school for an English assignment. My teacher must have thought I was weird (I am weird) but I got a good grade for it - it was my interpretation of their music and what it made me feel at the time. Still nice to listen to them every now and again although, like you say - we tend to move on and our music taste evolves. I still have the CDs of theirs that I bought decades ago 🙂

That's how our musical tastes evolve but even so there are always musical groups that remain forever in our repertoire. Greetings and thanks for commenting!

I've been thinking that too - the evolution is actually quite nice in restrospect. There are some bands that I used to listen to that I now hear and I'm like "What the actual F**k was I thinking?" lol, I guess we all have those moments 🤣
