Every Day A Different Story (1).jpg

For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

If you are not new to the show you see that something has changed. I will not change the format, just the focus

Yes I always wanted to do a Radio Show like Christian Slater in Pump Up The Volume, and I have attempted to turn my Midnight Gems Show into a podcast. But I forgot about the whole royalties thingy. So until I get a sponsor that idea is shelved.

After 6 months of my written radio show and shilling it I figured something out.

What are the pillars of this show?

  • Me finding Gems and sharing those with you dear reader.
  • Us going on a little midnight trip trough the musical universe.
  • You being able to listen to these songs using the Youtube & Spotify playlist.

Of course I keep telling my little stories, some backgrounds, or how a specific song makes you feel. @Mipiano loved how the deadly mushrooms for ICE3Peak made her feel last week.

But I have drawn the conclusion that the core business of this show is sharing those gems. Providing people a hand-picked playlist to get them away from the songs the algorithms are serving them all the time.

Because those algo´s are smart, they serve you what you like and you just keep suckin' in those songs, thinking you are discovering new stuff. You´re not, it´s the same song with a different mask.

This show is meant to serve you unmasked music, songs that might require an acquired taste. And above all a free playlist every week for you to pick out the gems that the algo´s will never make you swallow.

Kick It

Well that will be my new intro for a while and probably the loudest I am gonna get to night so I better play this snippet as well before I go soft:

Curtain-up

After being a bit too loud last week I wanted to get back to my usual self this week, back to basic. Just some pretty songs with or without memories.

This next one was just such a nice little surprise, just go check out her channel if your ears like what she is feeding them.

Billie Marten - I Can't Get My Head Around You

Now you might have heard the original version in my Tune Tune Train Musical riddle, but the true gem I kept save for tonight. I am a big fan of these ladies, and yes the song was written by Bat Biter Ozzy!

Larkin Poe - Take what you want

Now lets go a little darker, somehow this song from years back came to mind when I heard the Edwyn Collins song A girl like you. I have that with some songs that in my mind they are connected and this just such a song.

Matthew Sweet - Devil With The Green Eyes

The things you find when you are not looking for them can be so amazing. I was looking for a totally different Waterbaby and then this appeared.....internet is such a magical thing.

WaterBaby - Thin Air

Now I am sure you are curious about the WaterBaby I was looking for, it´s this baby next to Hannes. Now at first glance I did not know what to make from this minimalistic song and video, but it glued itself to my brain.

This a song you just don't get out your head, so don´t say I did not warn you.

Hannes ft WaterBaby - Stockholmsvy

Love that laidback vibe after all the noise I made last week, so let´s slide a bit deeper into this whabbit whole. Or is it a horse hole?

Q Lazzar - Goodbye Horses

Staying in the flow but making it a bit more freakie, found this song after listening to @Edje his DJ Maria discovery. Now this is my type of electronic music. Damn this song resonates so well.

CUPREOUS - Dissonance

Another song that did not want to come out of my head was this one by FAK

First Aid Kit - Out of My Head

These Midnight Gems sessions of mine really ask for headphones, some of these songs have just so many little layers that my DJ ears do not pick up on, unless I am living in my head....phones.

Dan Black - Headphones

Encore

Last week I boasted about all the famous Dutch bands I met, well I did not meet these guys.... I could have... I have been good friends with their sound guy back in the day. I heard quite a couple of stories about them, but well they just did the best cover of the song that kind of triggered this playlist.

And as I gave you the link to the original already let's have this one as a little dessert.

DI-RECT - A Girl Like You (Edwyn Collins cover) live @ Ekdom in de Morgen

Youtube Playlist

All these gems were added to the YouTube playlist.

Riddle Me This

Guess What, @jasperdick solved the riddle faster than I had expected. So there is nothing to riddle left, but you can have a try to see if you find the connection in this weeks Tune Tune Train (Just don't look at the comments).

What the fluff are midnight gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years...Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.

Hope you enjoyed this well-known wave of fantastic music and that you still feel like joining me on the next Midnight Gems Session coming soon.

Ooh, that song by Collins is so good. It's on the Empire Records soundtrack. One of my favorites. I probably should have picked that over Sugar High in my other post, but it was so hard. Do you remember back in the day there was an app where you could use your MP3 library to create your own radio station? I don't remember the name, but it was this random underground thing. Not any of the big sharing sites like Napster or Limewire.

No idea, but it sounds like I would love it.... Napster is where my MP3 life started great memories, but probably because of the lady who´s connection I was allowed to use back then !LOLZ

I don't think the flounder I caught today was very happy with me.
He kept looking at me kinda sideways.

yeah, I used to pull stuff down on the University network where I was going to school. Then I would save it all on a ZIP drive. Those things could hold 100 MB! I wish I could remember the name of it now.

I dont want to say its the age but I feel like I have too much info on my hard drive making it harder to access that useless info I have stored😂

Yeah, that could be it! It was at least a decade ago if not two, so I don't feel too bad about it.

@whywhy... hey BitcoinBaby, I loved the Larkin Poe. It must be that I'm a little tragic hahaha. Wow that guitar I love it I'm listening to Preachin' Blues and... also Mad As A Hatter. Yes, that last one is definitely my song. What a gem you've led me to discover.

And Matthew Sweet is not exactly sweet hahaha. Inquietante... 😧

The devil with the green eyes
Said you were never meant to be mine
'Cause I came up from a dark world
And every love I've ever know is dead

Thin Air's concept is the same throughout, of course, her videos are minimalist and her voice is minimalist as well. It's an electronic fusion and very experimental... I'm not an expert in music but in a way it reminds me of Björk.

(mi preferido)

Well, I'm almost ready to go to work. I loved your selection and it took me to other things, it's the best of all this, certainly.

First Aid Kit - Out of My Head

( right now I'd like to stay inside my mind, because if I go out I think I'll die ) ;) Ya está en mi playlist.

Did I ever say that this is my favorite community within Hive? well it is.

Thanks my friend... see you!

What A lovely comment and I can agree with you on all points even the bjork and mad as a hatter part, but especially on the fact that Q-Inspired is a very nice community with many interesting posts. Thanks for you comment, that is why I deep dive into these tunes every week!
