Midnight Gems -Your Free Mix-Tape Show - E 56 "My Musical City Trip"

image.png

For those of you who are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

Last week you and me enjoyed a real nice trip together Dear Reader. It was soft, warm, and smooth. It really felt like home. Today not so much I am afraid, today will feel like anything but home.

Just FYI if you don´t want to miss a show let me know in the comments and I add you to the tag list.

A couple of weeks ago someone told me to listen to this next song and I was like well okay, never heard of the guy but if you say so.

I was lost even before he started singing and more once he opened his Boca and went on about Vodka con Limon. Seriously I love melancholic songs and maybe my Spanish is still sucky but this song makes me smile and melancholic. Very glad I met Joaquin.

Joaquin Sabina - Leningrado

Then I was like and where to go now, and well I am gonna do a very cheesy thing this week. I know I always take you on these amazing trips Dear Reader, but today we keep it simple.

We will just go on a city trip, you & me, and I will lead the way. And one of the first cities that comes to mind is Havana, and no I will not play that popular pop song, but a band I really like.

Orishas - Havana 1957

Guess we will take a boat from that Island with two faces, to a place with a very colored history, it will take us an ocean to get there but I am sure it will be worth it. It´s a town I would like to visit one day and practice my Afrikaans.

Shades of Africa - song for Cape Town

This one is probably based on The Hangover, but it just is such a pleasant little song and Cape Town to Bangkok is less of a hassle than if you would need to get there from LA.

Deepend & YouNotUs feat. Martin Gallop – Woke Up In Bangkok

Talking about pleasant, I hate flying but I love arriving in a new country, making memories. I´ve been to Italy but never made it to Rome and I might never do so. Italy has so much good stuff, I could travel there forever.

Dermot Kennedy - Rome

If you did not hear it, Dermot is Irish and there are plenty of songs about that place and rocky roads to Dublin, but how many songs do you actually know about Glasgow and are sung with such a lovely Scottish accent?

And Rome - Glasgow is only a three-hour flight so let's go!

The Snuts - Glasgow

My goodness time flies when you are flying, so many places so little time. The next one will take us to many places, but Tokyo is key and I am so curious, it´s probably my Western Point Of View, but Japan and the Japanese they are so.... peculiar (Can you still say that or am I getting canceled again?).

White Lies - Tokyo

Oops sorry Dear Reader we need to go back, we skipped a city. The City, the City of Love. Paris, a city so many want to visit and it´s probably worth it, if it wasn´t filled with bloody tourists.

Malcolm McLaren ft. Catherine Deneuve - Paris Paris

Guess I have to say bye-bye already and take another plain, yes blame me for climate change, to a place I really would like to go. If you follow me you might know I have a weakness for America Latina and well it does not get much better than Santo Domingo if you ask me.

This song just doesn´t want to stop living in my head rent-free, so I guess I just need to go there and bring it back home.

Valentina - en santo domingo

Encore

Talking about a city flooded by tourists, this one is even worse than Paris if you ask me.

Amsterdam and A Spanish Guitar.....

Riddle Me This

Guess What, my riddle was not solved.

This week's riddle was elegantly solved, someone took the effort to figure out that all three artists had a song about the city you heard in the first song of today´s trip.

What the fluff is Midnight Gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years...Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.

Hope you enjoyed this well-known wave of fantastic music and that you still feel like joining me on the next Midnight Gems Session coming soon.

Honestly the music selection was so dope but 'I woke up in Bangkok' actually got me because I'm a sucker for country music.
Thank you for sharing.

As always, the songs shared are amazing. I do like the first song too. Maybe it is because I am learning Spanish and could hear some words I know, or maybe it is the tune. I can't say I'll have to listen in again.
