Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 94

Beyond The Looking Glass is the second book in the Unseen series, a story that came to me from the other side. A story where I thought I was just the narrator until I heard the Words of the Unseen.
This second story goes beyond time and place and mixes the long ago with the here and now. Because history keeps repeating, until we learn and do something about it.

Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 94

"Bang!"
I wake up startled, again.
What the fuck is going on in this place at night, that must have been the third time I hear that noise.
Itยดs like someone is kicking or hitting the door of my cell, then something starts to dawn on me.
The Spaniard with the curls..., I am so slow, only now I understand what he meant with that finger. He overheard my story when I spoke to those African boys, and as we are all innocent in jail, some stories remain better untold.
In prison they are not nice to men who rape women, and even less nice if such a woman is handicapped. The noise is making sense and I even think I know who it is, the big bearded and tattooed police officer who strip searched me.
He had this very unpleasant attitude towards me for no reason at all, I thought at the time. But they can see my file
Hell, that is not making it easier. Being convicted already while the investigation has not even started. I am sure that is the reason why that Dutch officer with the weird title felt the need to wake me up in the middle of the night as well, just to tell me:
"You are accused of kidnapping and penetrating a person who is not legally competent...," and then something to confirm I understood her.
That was before this third knock on the door and the only thing I thought was, fuck off, why all this noise, let me sleep.
Why does this have to happen now, itยดs not like I am gone tomorrow.
Now with the third bang it starts to dawn on me, you are not guilty until proven guilty, yes indeed. Apparently that does not apply to police officers.
Now I also understand that remark of the Spanish guard, "That I should keep quiet because I was the one who had done something with children."
At that moment, I thought he must have been mistaken, that it was probably meant for the older Moroccan man who was also being transferred to the airport.
But he was talking about me, and I also understood that finger. As they have nothing for real, I really wonder what my file says because these types of reactions have to come from somewhere.
That morning I see my lawyer for the first time, a hip fifty-something with a southern accent. His accent makes me happy.
"Is it normal that they bang on my cell door every few hours," I ask before the conversation has even started.
"No, that's not it, should I file a complaint?"
I think for a moment, I don't want anyone against me here... or at least not more than necessary.
"No, not yet."
He nods, "Fine, you will be questioned by two detectives in a moment. Do you want me to be there?"
What a question on TV, the lawyer is always present during an interrogation.
"Why do you ask that?"
He folds his hand, "Did you know in any way that this girl was legally incompetent?"
That whole word means nothing to me.
"What do you mean, or what does that mean? I know her for six months and there is nothing wrong with her. She had just finished school, she went there by herself, on her bike. She even completed an internship. She writes flawlessly, and knows very well what she wants."
I pause; "No, she's not whatever that is, what you just said."
Still with his hands folded in front of his face, "that's what I think too. Based on the testimonies of people from her school, she knew very well what she wanted, and she had no problem saying no."
"If you haven't done anything wrong, it might be better if you go without me. You can stop the interrogation at any time if you don't want to continue without a lawyer."
Damn, this is tricky. I feel naked going in there without a lawyer. But I get it. I have nothing to hide and I have to prove it.
"Okay, I will do it. But one thing, how could I have known she was, how did you call it legally incompetent?"
"It means she is unable to make decisions on her own. To accuse you, she would need to be legally declared incompetent by a judge, and you should have been aware of it."
