Beyond The Looking Glass is the second book in the Unseen series, a story that came to me from the other side. A story where I thought I was just the narrator until I heard the Words of the Unseen.

This second story goes beyond time and place and mixes the long ago with the here and now. Because history keeps repeating, until we learn and do something about it.

Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 91

Dear Reader, you are taking your little bit of freedom for granted.

Complaining about how we are limited by the current structures that govern us is a favorite pastime for many.

Many that do not realize that absolute freedom comes with absolute responsibilities.

It´s so romantic to think we are born free, that we do not have to answer to nobody.

But a world fueled by anarchy, by the survival of the fittest is a brutal, decaying husk of civilization where survival is a daily battle against starvation, violence, and disease.

Freedom? Maybe. But if that is true freedom; a world with no rest, no future, only the unrelenting grind of survival until your body finally gives out, who still wants it?

It´s icy cold but the airing is mandatory and while I stare over the field surrounded by walls something very special happens.

A tall gypsy guy who seems to inspire a weerid kind of awe in everyone is new in the court yard. It´s clear his reputation precedes him, although nobody told me anything. Groups of 2 or three inmates move up and down the enclosure than the tall guy halts, just before passing by a younger gypsy guy.

The tall guy looks down at the boy who, for sure, is not yet twenty "Nice shoes, swap?"

I can´t make out the exact words, and I don´t need to.

The shoes are swapped on the spot, without wasting another word.

I know the boy, at least he regularly stands with the group that occasionally buys me a coffee.

"Those were nice shoes, so of course I'll do that..." is what I hear as a defense.

The signal was very clear, and I understand that it is difficult to admit here that you are a little dog. This tall guy is clearly the alpha.

When I turn my head back towards where the tall guy stood he´s gone, and shit, he is now coming towards me.

"What are you doing here, where are you from?"

"Granada, I am Dutch but living and working here for years."

His height and the fact that he is missing many upper teeth is making him impressive, but the scare I felt when he was walking toward me is gone.

"I am waiting to be sent to The Netherlands, I think the mom of my girlfriend screwed me with a false accusation."

"You want a drink?"

For a moment, I pause, weighing my response. I don´t want to owe this guy anything. On the other hand, he sounds sincere.

"Sure, thanks."
He walks away and comes back with a coke and a bag of chips "Here, that really sucks man. But once you're in the Netherlands, it'll all work out."

"I live in Sacromonte," I nod knowing that more gitanos live there.

"I had a fight with a discotheque owner and got in the car, drove down that mountain like a madman and parked my car in his discotheque. I think they needed four officers to arrest me, I was so pissed off." He's two meters, not super wide or muscular, but everything tells me that you really don't want to fight this guy.

"And now, how long?"
"A few months, but that discotheque won't be open for a while."

No idea why he's telling me this, why he's buying me chips and coke.
I give him a few more details about what happened as he seems seriously interested.

Then I look at his shoes, they must be too small. A nice brand but too small for a guy this tall.

I can see this guy flipping when agitated, but I think he´s just curious about my story. Life inside is kinda dull.

It´s hard to realize that these guys I'm hanging out with are all convicted criminals, and yes, this is probably the least strict part, but this is definitely not what you see on TV.

There is no time to finish the chips, but I don´t mind taking them to my cell. A food stash is great in a place like this, especially in my situation dependent on whatever is served.

"Once you're in the Netherlands, it'll all work out," still ringing in my ears when I enter my private cell, still thankful for the upgrade.

How would he know? Well, he knows more about this kind of thing than I do. And his words sounded reassuring,

I am already looking forward to lights out, what a great feeling not having to fall asleep in fear tonight.

That feeling did not last, everything is different tonight.

After the trip, we ended up in a shabby place, I don't know what to call it. Prison camp?

No cells but a kind of dormitory, I sleep in a bunkbed above a huge guy with whom I haven't exchanged a word.

The gypsy boy who now has shoes that are too big sleeps a bed away, we were locked up together in one of the compartments of the prison bus that brought us here.

The boy can´t read or write, I kinda feel bad for him. I can only imagine what kind of family he grew up in. And if that is how you start in life, well, it´s not really surprising he ends up here before his twenties.

The beds were assigned, and this Neanderthal down here wouldn't have been my first choice after my experience last week. The advantage is that as a prisoner, you don't have a choice; you don´t have to think, and you just do what you are told.

Sometimes that is not so bad, as Johan Cruyff so wisely says, every disadvantage has its advantage.

An advantage I did not think of, but I don't think anyone will wake up this bear below me to tell him he snores, because damn this guy is cutting down trees left and right.

I fall asleep with toilet paper in my ears, and sure no one will even hear my snoring above his lumberjack.
