Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 136

Beyond The Looking Glass is the second book in the Unseen series, a story that came to me from the other side. A story where I thought I was just the narrator until I heard the Words of the Unseen.
This second story goes beyond time and place and mixes the long ago with the here and now. Because history keeps repeating, until we learn and do something about it.

Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 136

Wonderful, I think I figured it all out on a cosmic level...
Unfortunately, I am still human, or at least that is what I like to think, or am made to think...who knows?
Who knows, indeed.
Who knows what's next?
Build it and they will come....sounds like something I heard before, but it´s a lot easier to build something if you already have a place to build on.
What is a boy like me supposed to do next?
Find a place, I guess.
I have been thinking about the needs, but I have no clue where.
So I did what any normal person would do and asked the almighty.
Chat, list me 10 places in Spain that:
- Are max. two hours from an airport
- Are affordable
- Are not near Mass Tourism.
- Are green but not swampy.
- Have a local government positive to ecotourism
- And are not at the lowest point due to the risk of it getting flooded
Thanks Chat (is something you should never say)
Area | Airport | Environment | Why It Fits |
---|---|---|---|
1. Sierra de Gredos (Castile‑León) | Madrid (~2 hrs) | Mountainous, pine/beech forests, >800 m elevation | Protected park with positive regional support ([en.wikipedia.org][1]) |
2. Extremadura (e.g., La Vera, Monfragüe) | Badajoz, Cáceres (≤2 hrs) | Rolling hills, biosphere parks, dry summers | Regional green corridors & UNESCO biosphere |
3. Asturias (Picos de Europa, Redes/Ponga) | Asturias airport (~1 hr) | Lush yet hilly, temperate | Green destination with ecotourism plans |
4. Aragon – Cinco Villas & Guara Park | Zaragoza (~1–1.5 hrs) | Semi-mountain, dry summers | Sustainable tourism certification |
5. Murcia – Sierra Espuña | Murcia (≤1 hr) | Pine forests in semi-arid climate | Regional park, eco‑tourism support |
6. Delta del Ebro, Catalonia | Reus / Barcelona (~2 hrs) | Elevated river wetlands, not floodplain slopes | UNESCO reserve, ecotourism hub |
7. AlmerĂa – Cabo de Gata / inland | AlmerĂa (~30 min) | Arid scrubland, coastal reserves | Protected, off the mass-tourism coast |
8. Galicia – RĂas Baixas / Vigo hinterland | Vigo (~30 min) | Green, mild, not low-lying | Quiet, affordable, scenic |
9. Menorca (rural inland) | Mahón (~15 min) | Mediterranean, biosphere reserve | Eco‑villa success shows local welcome |
10. León – Babia / Cantabrian fringe | León / Asturias (~1 hr) | Mountain meadows, forested slopes | Remote, tranquil, non-touristy |
Thanks Chat, now let's see which I can cross off my list immediately.
I have been looking at Asturias, but the amount of rain there is a bit much for my taste.
Badajoz is too local, the airport needs to be at least as big as Reus. So, Vigo and Almeria are small, but acceptable, although I would remove Almeria in general. And anything near Barcelona, as it would mean I have to learn their weird language.
As far as Almeria goes, been there, but it´s not what my mind's eye has been seeing.
Menorca, it sounds really attractive...
Island life and all that...but it might be too limited when it comes to buying opportunities, but I will not let it go entirely....
So what is left
Area | Airport | Environment | Why It Fits |
---|---|---|---|
1. Sierra de Gredos (Castile‑León) | Madrid (~2 hrs) | Mountainous, pine/beech forests, >800 m elevation | Protected park with positive regional support ([en.wikipedia.org][1]) |
4. Aragon – Cinco Villas & Guara Park | Zaragoza (~1–1.5 hrs) | Semi-mountain, dry summers | Sustainable tourism certification |
5. Murcia – Sierra Espuña | Murcia (≤1 hr) | Pine forests in semi-arid climate | Regional park, eco‑tourism support |
9. Menorca (rural inland) | Mahón (~15 min) | Mediterranean, biosphere reserve | Eco‑villa success shows local welcome |
So what is next?
Really, I feel so clueless.
Did I not feel the same when I bought my apartment?
I have to admit that these kinda purchases the first time will make you feel small...or at least make me feel small.
Okay, keep going, don´t get distracted.
What would be the cost of buying something?
"Virtual assistant, check those areas for available places to buy."
Oh, ehh, but first, how big should it be?
I had never thought about that, but as I keep hearing that I need to keep buying more after the initial purchase, I guess that means I can start small.
It should be at least 3000 square meters, I thought, till I did the math:
To start with...?
It sounds kinda small, or maybe I have big plans?
What could I put on that?
Type | Area (m²) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Ultra-small | 10–15 m² | Often on wheels; minimal features. |
Standard tiny home | 20–30 m² | Includes a small kitchen, bathroom, and loft. |
Spacious tiny home | 30–40 m² | May include a separate bedroom or open layout. |
Let´s go for houses of 30 square meters and then a garden, a bit of privacy, community buildings....
- Tiny house: 30 m²
- Private garden/outdoor area: ~70 m² (e.g. 7×10 m)
- Shared infrastructure (paths, utilities, green zones): ~30–50% overhead
I could fit 20-25 tiny houses?
Okay, I am really not good at imagining square meters, at least not yet.
25 is more than I was counting on. So if the surface is completely available, it could work.
Although I prefer to start with a bit more space and fewer buildings.
Okay, so 3000-5000 square feet will cost between 30 and 80.000 euros, but I did not check what a Tiny house might cost...
Type | Area (m²) | Notes | Estimated Cost (USD) |
---|---|---|---|
Ultra-small | 10–15 m² | Often on wheels; minimal features. | $20,000–$35,000 |
Standard tiny home | 20–30 m² | Includes a small kitchen, bathroom, and loft. | $35,000–$60,000 |
Spacious tiny home | 30–40 m² | May include a separate bedroom or open layout. | $60,000–$85,000+ |
Alright, so what am I thinking?
3 small ones at 25K
2 bigger ones at 45K
165K buildings
75K Land
35K Adjustments & Issues(Pool, removing boulders, planting)
25K Taxes and Expenses
This project, in its initial and most basic form, would cost 300.000 euros.
That number makes me think about all those years, when I felt I would never be willing or able to buy a house.
Even a few years ago, 300.000 would have felt way out of reach, but now.... it actually sounds affordable, kinda cheap maybe.
Looking at all those numbers again, I think I prefer to start with more land and fewer houses if I need to sacrifice anything.
But I don´t think I do, as I might look at getting those houses with a mortgage:
Scenario | Rate Type | Interest Rate (%) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Movable tiny house (personal loan) | APR (personal loan) | ~6–7 % | Term ≤10 years |
Fixed tiny house (mortgage) | Variable (EurĂbor + margin) | ~3 % | EurĂbor ~2.08% + ~1% bank margin |
Fixed mortgage | ~2–3 % | Banks offer fixed rates in this range |
Hence, this most basic of plans feels very doable, but as always, that is not the end.
My twisted mind keeps telling me I am making the human assessment.
I am ignoring the support and abundance. I am thinking like a frugal Dutch grocer.
