Beyond Doubt (2).jpg

Welcome to my seemingly endless journey.
A trip that will take you to places I might have visited many moons ago.
It´s a tale that came back to me when I meditated on one of my past lives. A life I told you about in my unbelievable true story.

As promised in that story I will now share this story with you.

Chapter 97

Dear Reader, this may be a strange question, but do you still vote?

Do you feel like it makes any difference?

Was there ever that full, youthful conviction that your vote would make a difference?

That the puppets, who eventually end up on the plush, would actually create a better world?

The better world starts with you and ends there. Outside of that it is mainly all for one and the more you have the less you give.

Yet none of us is willing to take up arms against the current rule. We are convinced that violence will lead to long, pointless suffering. TWhich will cost more lives than it will save.

These are great conversations and ideas, but can they ever become reality?
We set out to teach the boss of the world to love the world. To show him that she is no one's property. And if it were possible to stop the slaughter that I foresee.

Now that we are so close, everything seems possible and impossible at the same time.
How can we ever reach the Sikh?
Why would he listen to us?
What can we say that would convince him to abandon his current policy?

It would be a miracle if we ever get into the city. The conversation that Numico witnesses takes place in a dream and could remain a dream forever.
We know there is a good chance that what we are fighting for is a lost cause, but no one gives up. Everyone's heart is convinced of the usefulness of our quest. But what if all our escapes from death have been chance?

All dreams and visions are just a sick twist of fate, which I often have a hard time wrapping my mind around.

Thinking about everything that could happen, I fall asleep, I sleep until well into the morning. When I awake, I am free from all the thoughts and doubts that terrorized my mind the previous night.

From my window, I see that Dadrie and Numico are already working in the fields. I wash and then walk out through the kitchen. Before I even get outside, Cabilah thrusts a bowl of soup and a hunk of bread into my hands. The taste is delicious, and I wolf it down like a starving person.

Outside, everyone is busy rounding up a large group of cows, and I follow suit. We take them to a pasture and keep an eye on the animals during the afternoon. In the meantime, Kreytu explains how we can best float and how we can chase away unwanted animal visitors.

In the afternoon, he takes Dadrie and me to a water stream. We drive a long way along the stream towards the mountains. The water flows faster as we ascend. When we stop, I can just see the fields in the distance.
“This is the border of my country,” says Kreytu, “I am going to show you something that only my father knew.”

He walks to a bush, and a sieve appears under a thick layer of leaves. Kreytu takes off his shoes, rolls up his legs, and steps into the water. He holds the sieve underwater and slowly moves it across the bottom. He takes the sieve back to the surface, examines the contents, and throws it away. He repeats this ritual for some time.

I look at Dadrie, and he looks back. We both shake our heads. It is clear the man is looking for gold, but it seems he is having no luck. It is also strange because we have not come across any settlements or encampments of gold seekers on the way here. Then Kreytu comes out of the water and puts his sieve under the bushes again.

“Unfortunately,” I say softly, Kreytu looks up at me and laughs.
“Nothing, unfortunately,” and he opens his hand, and there is a shiny nugget in the middle of the hand. Is it really true?
He hands it to me, and I look at it closely. It really is gold, not much but how long has he been at it?

“My secret is now our secret. Of course, Cabilah and Numico can share in the knowledge, but let it remain between us. We can only search here for short periods; it should not become clear what we are doing here. If anyone here even gets wind, this country will be flooded with fortune seekers."

"On top of that, the little stream doesn't offer enough for that, but it may be able to help gather sufficient financial resources more quickly.
From now on, the three of us will make this trip every afternoon. Supposedly to inspect the country and its borders. That should give us an hour a day."

"According to my calculations, after a year, we would have enough to allow everyone to enter and leave the city freely. It is our best chance for now, as my status currently only allows me to hire one of you as a direct assistant, which gives him the right to go where I go and thus free access to the city."

We drive back, and Kreytu's words keep echoing in my mind. 'One year', what are the chances that my village would remain unnoticed for another year?

Even if I think the chances are quite high, what about all those other villages? A whole year before we could move on. Slowly I understand what she means by patience; it is clearly not about weeks.

Numico reassures me that evening, reminding me of the trust I had during our captivity. That our chance lies in the future and that we will learn important things here. Things that may support us in reaching the Sikh.

I know Numico is right again, but I don't want to know it. As far as I'm concerned, we go tomorrow. I can't live with this recurring delay.
