Thank God it's Friday
ItΒ΄s getting harder and harder to remember more things about those Nineties.

Last week I did my favorite series:
π‘»π’“π’šπ’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝑻𝒐 π‘Ήπ’†π’Žπ’†π’Žπ’ƒπ’†π’“ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 90𝒔 - My Fav 9 TV Shows In The Β΄90s

But what is left?

Is there anything left?

This question is not weird if you consider I have been running this series for months now coming up with new angles every week. Challenging myself to think and look back at the Nineties.

I covered a lot of things, and those on my personal changes, or lack thereof, actually gave me some nice insights.

I think I have some things I still would like to remember, or as today I wish I did not have to remember. But I do wonder if I will find enough thoughts to inspire me weekly into the new year.

The good thing, it does not matter.

ItΒ΄s just that I really love doing this series and all the engagement it creates as I have never done a series that got so many great comments every week.

Now that is probably my fault for not engaging enough myself and writing to niche, but still, I looooove the engagement.

See 23 where I am lucky if I get 5 on any other post.

And that is pretty normal the week before 22

And last month even 35!!

So I will keep going as long as my brain is able to dig something up, but maybe I would need to go Bi-Weekly in 2025....anyway I am talking about the future why I should talk about the past.

And about things in the past that really made an impact.

If you are having a fun, happy, positive day...... maybe you want to stop reading because the big impact things I remember are not beautiful or happy.

The Purple Power

I have talked a lot about how I felt the Nineties were so Liberal and that ever since the Β΄00s the world grew more rigid and polarization got a chance to grow.

I grew up in the Netherlands, and what happened there probably happened in many places globally. But the nineties brought this growing sense of Liberal Freedom.

This for me started with the fall of the Mauer, when the Berlin Wall fell the fear I had as a kid about the Cold War diminished.

The world seemed to be headed in a new direction, stepping away from stigmas that had been holding us back since the early 1900s.

In the Netherlands that became most obvious in 1994 when the country finally entered the era of Purple Power.
No, Not That Purple Power

But this amazing Purple Power:

kabinet-kok-i-l.jpg

Kok & Killing

Very high level you can say that this Kabinet Kok, was the shift from a country dominated by the farmers and the church to a more Liberal Socialist way of government.

Before this happened the Farmers and church had dominated Dutch politics since the 70s and in all honesty since the 1900s, but in the 70s they joined forces and ruled the Netherlands for 17 years.

So with the wall down, and those Criten Democrats out of the way the wind of change blew like never before.

So far so good you might say. And indeed there were changes made that were unprecedented.

The Purple coalition was notable for its focus on economic liberalization, reducing the deficit, and social reforms such as legalizing same-sex marriage and euthanasia.

It really felt like I was living in a country that grew together, but maybe that was just white privileged me. Because there was something growing under the surface.

And one man in particular was very well equipped to point that out.

That man was called Pim Foruyn and I donΒ΄t think we would see an ego like that in politics till Trump ran for president.

And to make it sync even more with the now....

Pim Fortuyn had no political background and became famous because he said what many thought. Close the borders, The Netherlands is full.

The guy had charisma & was known for his anti-immigration stance and criticism of Islam.

His Party The List Pim Fortuyn (LPF) seemed to come from out of nowhere and became the second biggest political party in the Netherlands with 18% of the seats.

But Pim was not there to witness his victory, like with Trump an assassination attempt was made, and this one was successful.

Date of Assassination: May 6, 2002

His assassin was Volkert van der Graaf, an animal rights activist.

His reasoning, Van der Graaf claimed he killed Fortuyn to protect vulnerable groups in society, as he believed Fortuyn's rhetoric threatened the rights and safety of minorities.

Till today there are theories that this was an inside job, because Pim wanted the Dutch Queen to resign and become the first Dutch President.

His rise to fame, but especially his assassination changed everything. My sense of Liberal freedom disappeared and sour polarization took over the country.

I never felt that warm Purple blanket again and left a couple of years later.

Now you might wonder what the second date is, and why I keep referring to this period as the purple era. Well, the red socialist party and the blue liberal party mixed together became a purple haze that made my nineties a special place.

The Other Thing & The Interbellum

Strangely looking back for me this assassination and that other big happening early Β΄00s are what truly ended my awesome nineties vibe.

The other thing that ended it was this one....

I think it changed the world for most of us.

I remember where I was when I heard that news and I will probably never forget. We ended the Cold War in 1989 with the Wall coming down and the new war started on 9/11 2001 ...... the War on Terror.

That sense of interbellum is probably one of, if not The cornerstones that made the nineties so different.

That Time Between The Wall and The Two Towers

#NinetiesFriday was brought to you by My 90s Rant

WTF do I do on #NinetiesFriday?
Well, don't do what I do because that would be copy/pasta!

But some ideas are music, movies, television, sports, or really anything Nineties related.

I assume movie, TV, or music topic reviews or talk will be most common, but you could also talk about a sports memory or something else.

Think the Pop Culture of the times, but it would be great to hear about little known and interesting bands or entertainment items. Don’t forget to use tag #NinetiesFriday

@geneeverett will give 3 basic income units to a winning random post every week that uses the #NinetiesFriday tag. Also @thebighigg has jumped in to match for 6 total weekly prizes! If anyone else wants to sponsor with 1 unit let me know or just send it if you don’t wanna commit to weekly πŸ‘

Yep, pretty clear that people only care about the 90's, which is absolutely silly because everyone knows the 80's were far superior in every way!

Okay you get my reward for most funny comment of my week. I am still feeling in Limbo between those two eras as a kid I really felt a weight lifted by the fall of the Berlin wall, but music wise I loved that 80s synth sound
