Thank The G Man Itยดs Freakin #NinetiesFriday

Last week, due to the crypto dump, I needed some happy news and so I posted this one:

๐‘ป๐’“๐’š๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ป๐’ ๐‘น๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† 90๐’” - Happy Weird Nineties Stuff

But I need to be balanced and the 1990s had its share of heartbreaking moments across the world.

Hence, if you are in your happy flow, please leave, please do go.

Because today is gonna be a sad new show:
untitled.gif

1 ๐Ÿ’” Death of Princess Diana (1997, UK)

  • The tragic car crash in Paris that took the life of Princess Diana shocked the world, sparking mass mourning and conspiracy theories.

It also sparked this song back in the chart...back at #1 Goodbye Englandยดs Rose and for me this song always is connected to the Lady,

2 ๐Ÿ’ฅ Oklahoma City Bombing (1995, USA)

  • A domestic terrorist attack killed 168 people, including 19 children, making it one of the deadliest attacks in U.S. history before 9/11.

This news reached Europe, and for some reason still rings a bell in my mind.

3 ๐Ÿ”ซ Columbine High School Massacre (1999, USA)

  • The school shooting in Littleton, Colorado, left 13 victims dead, forever changing discussions around gun laws and school safety.

Talking about bells ringing, damn this one made all of us scared when school bells would ring and:

I will never see a Trench coat without thinking of these boys.

4 โš  Yugoslav Wars (1991-1999, Balkans)

  • A brutal series of wars in Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo, leading to genocide, mass displacement, and atrocities like the Srebrenica massacre.

This for me really felt close to home.

And not because I was in Europe, but for a more personal reason. I trained the Dutch military to be sent to former Yugoslavia and I heard their stories while being out there on these training missions in Germany.

5 ๐Ÿ˜ข 1995 Kobe Earthquake (Japan)

  • The Great Hanshin Earthquake killed over 6,400 people, leaving thousands homeless and devastating the city of Kobe.

A few years ago I went through my first earthquakes and those are scary, I saw stuff move and it felt like the earth could open up any time but it did not get bad as this:

6 โ›ฉ Sarin Gas Attack in Tokyo Subway (1995, Japan)

  • The Aum Shinrikyo cult released deadly sarin gas in a terror attack on Tokyoโ€™s subway, killing 13 people and injuring over 5,000.

That number 1995 must mean:
ๆ‰‹ใ‚’ๆŒฏใ‚‹็ŒซใฎๅŠฉใ‘ใ‚‚ใชใใ€ใจใฆใ‚‚ไธ้‹ (Tewofuru neko no tasuke mo naku, totemo fuun)

Or for the non natives:
1995 means; Very bad luck with no help from waving cat

And of course a year later Hollywood came with their take on Sarin Gas.

.

This Gas is so potent that:

Though sarin was discovered in 1939 and incorporated into artillery shells, Germany did not use nerve agents against Allied targets. Adolf Hitler refused to initiate the use of gases such as sarin as weapons in WWII.

7 ๐Ÿ’€ Rwandan Genocideโ€™s (1994, Global)

  • While centered in Africa, the genocide shocked Asia, with countries like China and India witnessing refugee crises and international political debates over intervention.

I remember that I heard the name Rawanda every other night, I learned about Tutsis and Hutus and how they killed each other with machetes.

  • Over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered in one of the worst genocides of the 20th century.

8 ๐Ÿ› Nelson Mandelaโ€™s Struggle Before Presidency (1990s, South Africa)

  • Though apartheid ended, the early 1990s were still marked by violence, riots, and political unrest, causing continued suffering.

Maybe itยดs because of the Dutch historical connection with South Africa and the fact that Afrikaans is like very Old Dutch, my country was more connected.

But Mandela was big news back then.

And leading up to that, there was this Dutch Soccer Player really fighting for the cause:

And even singing about it, yes, in the interview heยดs shaved but itยดs the guy with the huge dreadlocks in the white shirt, seriously same guy.

9 ๐Ÿฆ  HIV/AIDS Crisis Peaks (1990s, Global)

And once Mandela was free, there was a new crisis of which SA was the Epic Center.

  • The AIDS epidemic hit its most devastating point, killing millions worldwide and prompting large-scale awareness efforts.

Aids was probably the biggest scare of the Nineties, for those who missed it ....it was like Covid that only attacked gay people or so we thought at the time.

And of course that ties in with that other drastic death of the Nineties, Freddie Mercury who died in 1991 & the Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness (1992)
๐Ÿ“ Location: Wembley Stadium, London, UK
๐ŸŽค Artists: Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, Guns Nโ€™ Roses, Metallica.

And there is just one song that represents that day if you would ask me:

I didnโ€™t include the Twin Towers because the 9/11 attacks happened in 2001, not the 1990s.

But there was this tragic event involving the Twin Towers in the '90s, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Was this just a test?

๐Ÿ’ฃ 1993 World Trade Center Bombing (USA)

A truck bomb was detonated in the underground parking garage of the North Tower on February 26, 1993.
6 people were killed and over 1,000 were injured.

The attack was carried out by Islamic extremists, and it was later revealed that Osama bin Laden had connections to the plot, or was that what they wanted us to believe?

Or was it just a test as it was meant to collapse the Twin Towers, but the structure held, that time.....

#NinetiesFriday was brought to you by My Nineties Rant

Just kidding and now for the serious rant!

WTF do I do on #NinetiesFriday?
Well, don't do what I do because that would be copy/pasta!

But some ideas are music, movies, television, sports, or really anything Nineties related.

I assume movie, TV, or music topic reviews or talk will be most common, but you could also talk about a sports memory or something else.

Make sure to use: #NinetiesFriday and post or cross-post in the Nineties Friday Community

Thank Goodness you made it till the end Pees, Love and I am out of here!

Why was the resistor fired from his job of leading the orchestra?
He was a terrible conductor.
