The Royal Mint has done it again. Just when you think the Music Icons series cannot possibly get any better, they go and drop something that sends the entire collecting community into a frenzy. Today marks the official release of the brand new 2025 Freddie Mercury 1oz Coloured Silver Proof coin, and if you are a fan of Queen, a fan of music history, or simply someone who appreciates a beautifully produced piece of silver, this one is going to hit all the right notes.

Freddie Mercury is one of those rare figures whose influence goes far beyond the stage. His voice, his creativity, his showmanship, and his ability to command a crowd are the stuff of legend. You only need to watch the Live Aid performance from 1985 to be reminded of why he is still considered one of the greatest performers of the twentieth century. Now, four decades later, the Royal Mint has immortalised Freddie in silver, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.

This coin is struck from 1oz of 999 fine silver and finished to the high quality Proof standard that collectors have come to expect from the series. The selective colour really makes this release stand out. Freddie’s famous bright yellow jacket from the 1986 Wembley performance is recreated with incredible clarity and instantly jumps out from the polished silver background. It is bold, it is vibrant, and it captures exactly what made Freddie unforgettable.

But the real story behind this release is the edition limit. Just 4,500 coins are available worldwide. To put that into perspective, the 1oz Queen Silver Proof coin that launched the entire Music Icons series had an edition limit of 7,500 and sold out completely. This new Freddie Mercury release has a significantly lower mintage, and if history is anything to go by, these are going to vanish faster than a guitar solo at a stadium concert. The maximum coin mintage is only 4,510, so the margin beyond the presentation limit is tiny.

Each coin comes presented in official Royal Mint packaging and includes a display box, a certificate of authenticity, and a protective capsule. Collectors will also be pleased to know that this release has been produced in collaboration with Mercury Songs Ltd, making it an officially endorsed tribute to Freddie’s legacy. The obverse features the work of Martin Jennings and the reverse has been beautifully designed by Henry Gray, who perfectly captured the spirit of Freddie’s performance persona.

For collectors with deeper pockets, the Royal Mint has also released a 2 oz silver version and a 1 oz gold edition, but for most of us, this 1 oz coloured Proof will be the star of the show. At 38.61 mm and weighing just over 31 grams, it is the perfect display piece, and with such a limited edition, it is more than likely to gain value in the years to come.
