Turning Distractions Into Rhythm

How do you Stay Focused in a World Full of Distractions?

This world is full of distractions. Flashing objects distract the eye, random thoughts get on one's mind's nerves, even laziness counts as a distraction, among others. And sometimes, maintaining focus is a real struggle.

I realized something in my high school years. Whenever I was doing my assignments, I found myself listening to the radio. Mama used to ask me, are you really studying or listening to music? She would turn the radio off, and I would feel lost in random thoughts. Then the assignment would feel hard to handle. But whenever the radio was on, I would be super focused on the assignment or reading.

I guess that's when and where I found my focus anchor. In music.

Music itself is distractive, but when I need to really focus on something, I use it to tune down my running thoughts. Like when I'm writing, I have some soothing music to listen to. Part of my mind is on the keyboard, the other part is quietly listening to music. I have also noticed that when that happens, I hate being distracted. Even a simple "hey" feels so loud. My mind shouts, I'm trying to be committed, please stay away!

Back at home whenever we worked on the farm, plucking tea, the only way I could focus on going home a little richer than yesterday, was by plugging my earphones and connecting with music. This helped me tune down the other people who were busy gossiping and focus on my main agenda, a fuller tea basket today.

Even when I follow the advice, set goals, do the hard task first, then the smaller tasks, I often end up incorporating music into those tasks as motivation. Whenever fatigue and/or laziness comes knocking, and I really have to do something, upbeat music gets me stimulated and re-energized and then, like a motor, I'm ready to run my course.

I really have tried doing many tricks, even the 20-minute focus, with a 5-minute rest, but all that has turned out to be futile. I cannot keep up with it the same way I can't keep up with keto. I don't know if my anchor is a healthy one, but it really comes in handy.

So, to answer the question, how do you stay focused in a world full of distractions? I use music as my anchor. It helps me block out unwanted noise, gives my mind a rhythm to follow so it doesn't wander and it energizes me when my body feels too lazy to focus.
