Jazz-Matinee - Songs for a very special day
Today @agmoore celebrates her 50th wedding anniversary!
In fact, a golden wedding anniversary is just one more milestone on the road to a happy future together.
“It’s in the way you smile and knowing that all the while you’re mine, and everything I am is yours. And when the sun’s in my eyes, and wind in my hair floating on a cloud, nothing can compare. Coastin’ high on the love of you, watching the way you move. Gliding, loving the things you do. You got me coastin’ high on the love of you.”
Today, in this special jazz matinee, it's less about the artists and more about the lyrics. Here's a little taste of Coastin' as performed by Bonny James.
“I thought it'd be worse 'cause it hurts me. But still, I can't see myself with no one else. 'Cause it was better than I imagined.” “I realize you're the only number I know by heart"
For the interpretation of his song Better Than I Imagined, pianist Robert Glasper asked R&B star H.E.R. and bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello to join him in the studio. A choice Glasper could not have made better.
What are the lyrics about? It's about love, which is capable of surpassing all expectations - even if there are a few challenges to overcome.
“Nothing seems to be lasting. But that isn't our affair. We've got something permanent. I mean in the way we care. It's very clear. Our love is here to stay.
Not for a year. But ever and a day. The radio and the telephone. And the movies that we know. May just be passing fancies. And in time may go.
But, oh my dear, our love is here to stay. Together we're going a long, long way.”
This beautiful song was written by George Gershwin. It has been sung by all the greats of jazz. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Hollyday, Nat King Cole and even Dinah Washington. I chose the version by Caleb Collins and Alicia Olatuja.
“I've been hearing your heartbeat inside of me. I keep your photograph beside my bed. Livin' in a world of fantasies. I can't get you out of my head. I've been waiting for the phone to ring all night. Why you wanna make me feel so good?”
“Every time I think of you. I get so emotional, baby. Ain't it shocking what love can do. I get so emotional, baby. Every time I think of you. I get so emotional, baby. Ain't it shocking what love can do?”
The song was originally written for Whitney Houston. But there is no doubt in my mind that Miles Davis can get more emotion out of his trumpet than the original. Lalah Hathaway complements Miles perfectly because they both take the time for emotions.
“Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm. And your cheeks so soft. There is nothing for me but to love you. And the way you look tonight.”
“With each word your tenderness grows. Tearin' my fear apart. And that laugh, wrinkles your nose. Touches my foolish heart. Lovely, never, never change. Keep that breathless charm. Won't you please arrange it? 'Cause I love you. A-just the way you look tonight.”
There's no doubt about it, that moment when she looks at him or her and remembers exactly how great he or she looks that night.
The song dates back to 1936 and was performed by Fred Astaire. The action takes place in Italy, in Bergamo to be precise. Oliver and Elio are not quite sober, but they experience the most beautiful kiss they have ever had.
So, for all of you out there who have already found love, who are still searching for it, or who may have even doubted that you would ever come face to face with it until this jazz matinee, we are now slowly packing up our things. The performers have a right to live out what they have put into words and music.
In any case, I have had a great deal of fun asking the artists to take the stage for this special edition.
For those of you longing for a more familiar version of the matinee, I'll have to put you off until next Sunday.
Until then, the archive is open to all, where you can search for the performers who have been on stage so far.

Thank you, @shanibeer 🌷
Great selection today!
This track by Snarky Puppy with Lalah Hathaway is also very good:
Happy Sunday! 😀
Thank you! This starts my day with a reminder of experiences and feelings we've had through the years. Music often says it best. I loved especially the last selection, where love needs no words. There is so much that goes on in a relationship, from beginning to end, that is not expressed through words. A look, a gesture, a kindness: these often speak of love more eloquently and powerfully than words.
Thank you for a morning filled with music, and evocation of a long life lived together.
I hope you have a most wonderful day.
