When talking about Stefan Redtenbacher, the question always arises: the musician, the producer, the educator, the composer, or the arranger? Today I'm going to focus on the musician and bandleader who, with Redtenbacher's Funkestra, adds a good pinch of funk to jazz. By the way, the formation has been existing since 1996.

Wenn die Rede von Stefan Redtenbacher ist, stellt sich stets die Frage: der Musiker, der Produzent, der Pädagoge, Komponist oder der Arrangeur? Heute richte ich mein Augenmerk vornehmlich auf den Musiker und Bandleader, der mit dem Redtenbacher’s Funkestra dem Jazz eine gehörige Prise Funk beimischt. Die Formation gibt es übrigens bereits seit 1996.

Twelve albums have been released so far, and the majority of the productions have been studio albums. But (and this needs to be mentioned) the Funkestra are recorded very differently from what we are used to hearing in a typical studio. All the tracks are recorded live. This is mainly because Stefan Redtenbacher, as owner of KnowledgeRocks Ltd, has earned himself a top position in live production with the Masterlink Sessions.

Bis heute wurden zwölf Alben veröffentlicht, wobei es sich bei den meisten Produktionen um Studio-Alben handelt. Doch (und dies sollte unbedingt Erwähnung finden) unterscheiden sich die Aufnahmen des Funkestra stark von dem, was wir von üblichen Aufnahmen aus Tonstudios gewöhnt sind. Sämtliche Titel werden nämlich stets live eingespielt. Dies liegt hauptsächlich daran, dass Stefan Redtenbacher als Eigentümer der KnowledgeRocks Ltd sich mit den Masterlink Sessions einen Spitzenplatz in der Liveproduktion erarbeitet hat.

For the recordings, he likes to invite not only the hottest jazz musicians in the UK, but also some of the biggest names in the genre from overseas. These include Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis, Keith Carlock (Steely Dan), Rick Margitza (Miles Davis), Cory Wong (Vulpeck), Doc Kupka, Lenny Pickett and Lee Thornburg (Tower of Power horn section) and Stanton Moore (Galactic).

Zu den Aufnahmen lädt er dann auch gerne die angesagtesten Jazzer Englands, sondern auch Größen dieser Musikrichtung aus Übersee. His journey to the stages of jazz and funk began at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna and continued via the Berklee College of Music to the University of Chichester. Since then his world has revolved around three pillars – music, technology and education. His teaching has taken him to Eton College, the Detroit Institute of Music, the London College of Creative Media and Anton Bruckner University.

Sein Weg auf die Bühnen des Jazz & Funk begann auf dem Konservatorium in Wien, über das Berklee College of Music bis hin zur Chichester University. Seither dreht sich seine Welt um drei Säulen – Musik, Technologie und die Bildung. Als Pädagoge arbeitet er am Eton College, dem Detroit Institute of Music, am London College of Creative Media und der Anton Bruckner University.
