»Certainty of Tides« – The critics are overflowing with praise. And me? I am just thrilled!

The new album by the Norwegian musician is the subject of our discussion. The editors of ["Jazz-Fun"] (https://www.jazz-fun.de/) sum it up with these words:
"This is a concept album, a quiet story told by sensitive artists in dim light. Music without categories, without boundaries, full of space and imaginative yet familiar sounds, with almost trance-like moods, simple melodies, narratives, contemplation and mysticism. A great album, we are delighted!"

Es ist die Rede von dem neuen Album des norwegischen Musikers. Die Redakteure von »Jazz-Fun« fassen es mit diesen Worten zusammen:

With less attention to the fact that I do not fully understand what exactly a concept album is supposed to be, I will limit my assessment to a widely used phrase: great cinema. With Nils Petter Molvær, I have been accustomed for more than 20 years to his compositions always taking me far away into nature, usually to a place completely foreign to me, which he brings closer and closer with his instrument.

Der Tatsache weniger Beachtung schenkend, dass sich mir nicht vollkommen erschließt, was genau ein Konzeptalbum sein soll, beschränke ich meine Beurteilung auf eine weitverbreitete Floskel: ganz großes Kino. Bei Nils Petter Molvær bin ich es seit mehr als 20 Jahren gewohnt, dass seine Kompositionen mich stets weit weg in die Natur führen, meist an einem mir vollkommen fremden Ort, den er mir mit seinem Instrument näher und näher bringt.

So he took me to Cambodia in 1997 and introduced me to the Khmer people. The same is true of the album that goes along with it. On the other hand, he takes me to the far north of his homeland and is not afraid to use musical forms of expression (such as electronica, hip-hop or raggae) that are less expected in that region. You can accuse Nils Petter Molvær of a lot of things, but to say that he doesn't like to experiment certainly doesn't work.

Dann wieder zieht er mich in den tiefen Norden seiner Heimat und scheut nicht davor zurück, musikalische Ausdrucksformen zu nutzen (wie Electronica, Hip-Hop oder Raggae), die in jener Region weniger erwartet werden. Wenn man Nils Petter Molvær so einiges vorwerfen kann – aber zu behaupten, er sei nicht experimentierfreudig, das funktioniert mit Sicherheit nicht.

Whether it's Moritz von Oswald (actually known as an electro producer) or Sry & Robbie (fully committed to Jamaican raggae) - Nils Petter Molvær does not rule out any collaboration from the outset, no matter how impossible. This is also the case on "Certainty of Tides", for which he invited the Norwegian Radio Orchestra into the studio. A good opportunity, he thought, to revisit some of his older compositions.

Ob Moritz von Oswald (eigentlich als Elektro-Produzent bekannt) oder Sry & Robbie (voll dem jamaikanischen Raggae verschrieben) - Nils Petter Molvær schließ keine, auch noch so unmögliche, Zusammenarbeit von vornherein aus. So auch jetzt, auf »Certainty of Tides«, für das er sich das Norwegische Rundfunkorchester ins Studio holte. Eine gute Gelegenheit, wie er wohl fand, auch einige seiner älteren Kompositionen einer Neubearbeitung zu unterziehen.

Nils Petter Molvær's opinion: "You could say that the symphony orchestra is an instrument and one of my favourite ones at that. The sound of the orchestra, in addition to the new arrangements, has brought a new vitality to the compositions and infused them with a new freshness."
It also seems interesting to me how the album ultimately got its special sound. Jan Bang, the person responsible in this case, placed 76 loudspeakers in a large hall - in the same arrangement as the orchestra would be seated and then remixed the individual compositions. "I think we may be the first to have used this recording technique. Suddenly the recording took on a completely different colour, with a much more powerful and spacious sound."

Nils Petter Molvær Meinung dazu: „Man könnte sagen, dass das Sinfonieorchester ein Instrument ist und dazu noch eines meiner liebsten. Der Klang des Orchesters hat neben den neuen Arrangements eine neue Vitalität in die Kompositionen gebracht und ihnen eine neuen Frische eingeflößt.“
Interessant erscheint mir auch, wie das Album letztlich seinen besonderen Klang erhielt. Jan Bang, der Verantwortliche in diesem Fall, platzierte in einem großen Saal 76 Lautsprecher - in der selben Anordnung, wie das Orchester sitzen würde und mixte dann die einzelnen Kompositionen neu ab. „Ich denke, wir sind vielleicht die ersten, die diese Aufnahmetechnik verwendet haben. Plötzlich bekam die Aufnahme eine komplett andere Farbe, mit einem viel gewaltigeren und großräumigen Klang.“
