Jazz doesn't necessarily have to be 'complicated' and 'weird'.

The living proof of this can be heard on the stage of the matinee today.

Today I would like to prove that although jazz (like almost all subdivisions of musical creation) is diverse, it is not necessarily complicated and must often be perceived as an imposition on the ear that is melodically programmed for catchiness. Maya Fadeeva has dedicated herself to this form of jazz, which immediately prompted critics to relegate her to a category that purists or orthodox jazz fanatics demonise as glam-jazz.

Heute möchte ich den Beweis dafür antreten, dass der Jazz zwar (wie nahezu alle Unterordnungen des musikalischen Schaffens) vielfältig, aber nicht zwangsläufig kompliziert und oftmals als eine Zumutung für das melodisch auf Eingängigkeit programmierte Ohr wahrgenommen werden muss. Maya Fadeeva hat sich dieser Form des Jazz verschrieben, was Kritiker sofort dazu veranlasste, sie in einer Sparte zu verschieben, die von den Puristen oder orthodoxen Jazz-Fanatikern als Glamjazz verteufelt wird.

Born on 13th May 1987 in St. Petersburg, she joined a musical school for talented children when she was seven years old. Before Maya Fadeeva came to Germany at the age of eleven, she spent a whole year at a music school in New York. When she was just twenty years old, the new resident of Düsseldorf knew with certainty that her musical path was going to be towards jazz.

Am 13. Mai 1987 in St. Petersburg geboren, nahm man sie mit sieben Jahren dort in der Musikschule für Hochbegabte auf. Bevor Maya Fadeeva mit elf Jahren nach Deutschland kam, verbrachte sie noch ein ganzes Jahr an einer Musikschule in New York. Mit gerade einmal zwanzig Jahren schien für die Neu-Düsseldorferin vollkommen klar, wohin die musikalische Richtung geht. Es sollte der Jazz sein.

Maya Fadeeva's professional career can be summarised as follows: she graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the Maastricht Conservatory in 2015. However, from 2011 to 2019 she regularly performed on stage at the “Jazz Rally Düsseldorf”, festivals in Kaliningrad, Viersen, Worms and the Leverkusen Jazz Days. In 2019, she collaborated with Bobby McFerrin and the WDR Funkhausorchester. The subsequent meeting with the Club des Belugas and producer Pat Anthony was particularly incisive.

Der berufliche Werdegang von Maya Fadeeva lässt sich wie folgt zusammenfassen: 2015 schloss sie ihr Studium mit dem Bachelor of Music am Konservatorium in Maastricht ab. Allerdings stand sie von 2011 bis 2019 regelmäßig auf der Bühne der »Jazz Rally Düsseldorf«, Festivals in Kaliningrad, Viersen, Worms und den Leverkusener Jazztagen. 2019 kam es mit der Zusammenarbeit mit Bobby McFerrin und dem WDR-Funkhausorchester. Ganz anschneidend anschließend, das Treffen mit dem Club des Belugas und dem Produzenten Pat Anthony.

The album that followed, “Chamëleon”, was hailed as a “little miracle” by the culture editors of the radio stations and the art critics. At long last, a new artist had been found who could be compared to Amy Winehouse. It was and is not only her spirited voice with that somewhat dark timbre – it is also the varied repertoire that Maya Fadeeva brings not only to her albums, but also to the stage.

Das daraus resultierende Album »Chamëleon« wurde von den Kulturredaktionen der Radiosender und des Feuilletons als “kleine Sensation” gefeiert. Endlich hatte man jemanden gefunden, die mit Amy Winehouse in einem Atemzug genannt werden durfte. Es war und ist nicht ausschließlich ihre temperamentvolle Stimme mit diesem etwas dunklen Timbre - es ist auch das abwechslungsreiche Repertoire, welches Maya Fadeeva nicht nur auf ihre Alben, sondern auch auf die Bühne bringt.

It's also worth mentioning that Maya Fadeeva herself adds jazzy sounds and lively beats to the music. Maya Fadeeva is active as a producer, a songwriter, and a performer. There is hardly a member of the audience who has been to one of her concerts who cannot confirm this positive impression.
In 2021, she dropped her second album, “That's My Style", which lives up to its name.

An dieser Stelle sollte nicht unerwähnt bleiben, dass die Künstlerin die Melodien mit Jazz-Aromen und heißen Grooves selbst kocht und würzt. May Fadeeva agiert nämlich als Produzentin, Songwriterin und Performerin. Kaum ein Publikum, das ihre Konzerte besuchte und diesen positiven Eindruck nicht bestätigen können.
2021 folgte dann auch endlich ihr zweites Album unter dem Titel »That's My Style«. Hier scheint der Name wahrhaftig das Programm zu sein!
