The multi-talented artist used these words to introduce his new production, which is now available on vinyl under the title "We Are". The many facets of Jonathan Michael Batiste (born on the 11th of November 1986 in Louisiana, USA) are well known. Now he is on the verge of a new chapter, one in which jazz is the subject of exciting moments.

Mit diesem Zitat aus dem Mund von Jon Batiste überschreibe ich die heutige Jazz-Matinee. Der vielseitige Künstler nutzte diese Worte bei der Vorstellung seiner neuen Produktion, die jetzt unter dem Titel »We Are« auf Vinyl zum Verkauf angeboten wird. Der Facettenreichtum von Jonathan Michael Batiste (geboren am 11. November 1986 in Louisiana/USA) ist hinlänglich bekannt. Nun schlägt er ein weiteres Kapitel auf, indem er dem Jazz spannende Momente beifügt.

Jon Batiste, pianist, bandleader, songwriter and singer, started the "We Are" project intending to find out what he himself sounds like. At the age of 34! But again, no surprise when you lend an ear to what this extraordinary musician has written, produced and released so far. Together with Kizzo and Autumn Rowe, they got to work and wrote most of the songs during the breaks on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where they also serve as music supervisors.

Jon Batiste, Pianist, Bandleader, Songwriter und Sänger, startete das Projekt »We Are« nach eigener Aussage, mit dem Willen, herauszufinden, wie er selbst klingt. Und das in einem Alter von 34 Jahren. Aber wiederum auch nicht verwunderlich, wenn man ein oder zwei Ohren dem widmet, was dieser außergewöhnliche Musiker bislang geschrieben, produziert und veröffentlicht hat. Gemeinsam mit Kizzo und Autumn Rowe machte er sich an die Arbeit und schrieb einen Großteil der Songs in den Pausen der „The Late Show with Stephen Colbert“, bei der er die musikalische Verantwortung trägt.

This remarkable fusion is the result of his re-integration of the music of his native Louisiana, that rich southern culture. Batiste comments:
"I've already shown people some of my musical side," says Batiste. "But there are so many facets of me that they don't even know about that are just as much a part of who I am as an artist. I hope this album will finally tell them all about me."

Mit dem Wiedereinbinden der Musik seiner Heimat Louisiana, dieser reichhaltigen Südstaatenkultur, kam es dann zu dieser bemerkenswerten Verschmelzung. Batiste sagt dazu:
„Ich habe den Leuten bereits einige meiner musikalischen Seiten gezeigt“, meint Batiste. „Aber es gibt so viele Facetten von mir, die sie noch gar nicht kennen, die aber genauso ein Teil von dem sind, was mich als Künstler ausmacht. Ich hoffe, dass sie durch dieses Album endlich alles über mich erfahren.“

Typical of this are the funk-influenced jazz compositions that seem to have become established in the South. With the Batiste family, we also get to know a whole clan of gifted musicians. From the grandfather to the father to the nephew who leads his own marching band through the streets, someone is always involved in every new production. In this case, it is his father, Michael Batiste, who takes care of the strings on the bass.

Typisch dafür der vom Funk geprägte Einschlag in die Jazz-Kompositionen, wie sie für den Süden absolut an der Tagesordnung zu stehen scheinen. Mit der Familie Batiste lernen wir noch so ganz nebenbei einen ganzen Clan begnadeter Musiker kennen. Vom Großvater, über den Vater bis zum Neffen, der seine eigene Marching-Band durch die Gassen führt, ist bei jeder neuen Produktion stets jemand eingebunden. In diesem Fall ist es sein Vater, Michael Batiste, der sich um die Saiten am Bass kümmert.

He is joined on the album by two of his colleagues from the big leagues — Trombone Shorty and PJ Morton (keyboard player for Maroon 5). "As a black man and an American, I felt that the record had to have one foot on my home soil," says Batiste, "as an allegory for all the things I'm talking about."
In this way, the whole album seems well suited to serve as the musical foundation for any demonstration of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Dazu gesellen sich dann noch zwei Kollegen aus der obersten Liga – Trombone Shorty und PJ Morton (Keyborder von Maroon 5). “Als Schwarzer und Amerikaner hatte ich das Gefühl, dass die Aufnahme mit einem Fuß auf meinem Heimatboden stehen musst“, sagt Batiste,“als Allegorie für all die Dinge, über die ich spreche“
So scheint das ganze Album tauglich, bei jeder Demonstration der“ "Black Lives Matter”-Bewegung als musikalische Grundlage zu dienen.

Jon Batiste expressed the hope that people will not only focus on anger and frustration, but that they will finally find unity in the fight against injustice.
Finally, let's give the artist another chance at explaining what he sees in this album: "I feel that it goes far beyond what can be categorised in a jazz context".
It is important to him to reach as wide an audience as possible and to entertain them in the best possible way. And with thirteen wonderful numbers on 'We Are', he should achieve this effortlessly.

Jon Batiste äußerte hierbei die Hoffnung, nicht lediglich Wut und Frustration in den Vordergrund zu schieben, sondern im Kampf gegen die Ungerechtigkeit endlich wieder zu einer Einheit zu finden.
Zum Abschluss überlasse ich noch einmal dem Künstler das Wort, der versucht zu erklären, was er in diesem Album sieht: „Ich habe das Gefühl, dass sie weit über das hinausgeht, was man noch in einen Jazzkontext einordnen könnte.“ Wichtig ist ihm, dass er mit ihr ein möglichst großes Publikum erreicht und bestens unterhält. Und das sollte ihm mit den dreizehn wunderbaren Nummern von »We Are« auch mühelos gelingen.
