Closer to each other – step by step

Does anyone have an idea off the top of their head what the gyil is? It is a xylophone, as it is mainly played in West Africa. Isaac Birituro, a native of Ghana, is an especially skilled player. He is the musician who, in September 2017, accepted a request from Sonny Johns, a British guitarist, composer and producer, to meet the master on the gyil. By the way, as a musician, Sonny Johns exclusively calls himself The Rail Abandon.

Weiß jemand auf Anhieb, um welches Instrument es sich bei der Gyil handelt? Es ist ein Xylofon, wie es vorwiegend in Westafrika gespielt wird. Jemand, der dieses Instrument besonders gut beherrscht, ist der aus Ghana stammende Isaac Birituro. Exakt jener Musiker kam im September 2017 der Bitte von Sonny Johns, einem britischen Gitarristen, Komponisten und Produzenten nach, der unbedingt die Bekanntschaft mit dem Meister am Gyil zu machen. Nur ganz nebenbei bemerkt - als Musiker nennt sich Sonny Johns ausschließlich The Rail Abandon.

Thanks to The Rail Abandon colleagues Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews and Tom Ravenscroft, the newly formed duo's first studio album was released in 2019. They called it 'Kalba'. It didn't take long for the praise to come and they were soon embarking on a major European tour. They were joined on stage for vocal support by Helen Domkier and Yolanda Eyama, both no longer unknown in the African music scene.

Unter Mithilfe der Kollegen von The Rail Abandon, als da wären Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews und Tom Ravenscroft, erschien 2019 das erste Studioalbum des neu formierten Duos. Sie gaben ihm den Namen “Kalba”. Der Beifall ließ nicht lange auf sich warten und schon startete man auf eine ausgedehnte Tour durch Europa. Als stimmliche Unterstützung nahm man Helen Domkier und Yolanda Eyama mit auf die Bühne – beide in der afrikanischen Musikszene keine Unbekannten mehr.

During the tour, they became more and more integrated musically. However, they decided to take a creative break. It was not until 2022 that their second album, 'Small Small', was released. The unusual name came about because they wanted to document how the band came closer to each other step by step, how they found the common rhythm bit by bit and how they slowly but surely came closer to the common project.

Obwohl man sich auf der Tour musikalisch immer besser miteinander verschweißte, entschloss man sich dann doch, zuerst einmal eine schöpferische Pause einzulegen. Es dauerte bis 2022, bis mit “Small Small” das zweite Album veröffentlicht wurde. Zu dem ungewöhnlichen Namen kam es, weil man dokumentieren wollte, wie die Band Schritt für Schritt aufeinander zuging, Stück für Stück den gemeinsamen Rhythmus fand und langsam aber stetig dem gemeinsamen Projekt näherkam.

Sonny Johns has said that: "Every second album is a difficult process – how do you create something that follows on from the first, but is still different enough? It's especially difficult when the first album was made under the unique conditions of never having played together before, in an unfamiliar environment. It's also difficult when you live on different continents. On top of that, we had to record an album in the middle of a pandemic.”

Sonny Johns sagte dazu: »Jedes zweite Album ist ein schwieriger Prozess - wie schafft man etwas, das an das erste anknüpft, aber dennoch anders genug ist? Besonders schwierig ist es, wenn das erste Album unter den einzigartigen Bedingungen entstanden ist, dass man noch nie zusammen gespielt hat, in einer ungewohnten Umgebung. Es ist auch schwierig, wenn man auf verschiedenen Kontinenten lebt. Zu diesen Schwierigkeiten kam noch hinzu, dass wir mitten in einer Pandemie ein Album aufnehmen mussten.«

The work in the studio was particularly influenced by the news of the death of the most famous African jazz drummer, Tony Allen. Not only was he originally from Ghana, but he also belonged to Isaac Birituro's extended family. So the album is also about loss, frustration, and hope for the light at the end of the tunnel. Uniting what divides – in the hope of a better future for people. Birituro and Johns describe their music as world-music with a solid jazz foundation.

Besonders prägend bei der Arbeit im Studio, war die Nachricht vom Tod des berühmtesten afrikanischen Jazz-Drummers Tony Allen, der ursprünglich nicht nur aus Ghana stammte, sondern auch der Großfamilie von Isaac Birituro angehörte. Daher handelt das Album auch vom Verlust, der Frustration und der Hoffnung auf das Licht am Ende des Tunnels. Trennendes vereinen – in der Hoffnung für die Menschen auf eine bessere Zukunft. Birituro und Johns bezeichnen ihre Musik als Weltmusik, die mit der Basis Jazz einen festen Stand hat.
