A new musical guise for the harp

Unusual sounds in the repertoire of a guest from Switzerland

I have to admit that I approached the album 'Work Witch!' with a certain amount of scepticism. The harp in jazz? The instrument I inevitably associate with classical music, chamber music or music with mystical overtones? More correctly – the harp in jazz. Because the release of last month's album was a lesson to me in how versatile a harp can be in jazz.

Ich muss ganz ehrlich zugeben, an das Album ‘Work Witch!’ mit einer gewissen Skepsis herangegangen zu sein. Die Harfe im Jazz? Das Instrument, welches ich unweigerlich mit der Klassik, Kammermusik oder mystisch angehauchten Musik in Verbindung bringe? Korrekter ausgedrückt – gebracht habe. Denn, das im vergangenen Monat erschienene Album hat mich gelehrt, wie abwechslungsreich eine Harfe im Jazz sein kann.

You just have to know how to handle the instrument and what variety you can get out of it. And this is where the woman comes into the picture who knows how to put all these skills into practice almost to the point of perfection. We are talking about Esther Sévérac, who was born in Geneva (CH) and studied classical concert harp at the University of Basel. The fact that Ms Sévérac was already in contact with the Basel jazz scene during her studies was probably less of a concern to her professor, Sarah O'Brian.

Man muss nur bestens darüber Bescheid wissen, wie das Instrument zu handhaben und welch Vielfalt ihm zu entlocken ist. Und hier kommt nun die Frau ins Spiel, die all diese Fähigkeiten nahezu in Vollendung umzusetzen weiß. Die Rede ist von Esther Sévérac, die in Genf (CH) geboren wurde und an der Hochschule in Basel das Spiel auf der klassischen Konzertharfe erlernte. Dass Frau Sévérac bereits während des Studiums den Kontakt zu der Basler Jazz-Szene suchte, dürfte ihre Professorin, Sarah O’Brian, weniger erfreut haben.

Today, still at home in Switzerland, she teaches in Basel, runs her own harp studio and gives lessons on this seemingly monstrous instrument. To reach a wider audience and promote the harp, she uses all social media channels, from TikTok to YouTube. It helps that Esther Sévérac has a bachelor's degree in multilingual communication, which she obtained in addition to her musical commitments.

Heute, noch immer in der Schweiz zu Hause, unterrichtet sie selbst in Basel, führt ein eigenes Harfenstudio und erteilt Unterricht an diesem monströs erscheinenden Instrument. Um einem breiteren Publikum zugänglicher zu werden und mehr ‘Werbung’ für die Harfe zu machen, nutzt sie alle Social-Media-Kanäle – von TikTok hin zu YouTube. Hilfreich dabei, der Bachelor in mehrsprachiger Kommunikation, den Esther Sévérac neben ihren Engagements als Musikerin erwarb.

On the jazz side, she plays with saxophonist Niko Seibold in the 'DuoHarpkissax' as the jazz ensemble 'Elfton'. She also plays with the improvisation trio 'Orbitarium' and the jazz quartet 'Ayé'. As if all this were not enough, Esther Sévérac also performs as a solo artist. This is a wonderful opportunity to present a whole new side of the harp to a public that is interested in it.

Was den Jazz betrifft, ist sie mit dem Saxophonisten Niko Seibold im ‘DuoHarpkissax’ als Jazz Ensemble ‘Elfton’ aktiv. Dazu gesellen sich musikalische Ausflüge mit dem Improvisations-Trio ‘Orbitarium’ und dem Jazz-Quartett ‘Ayé’. Als ob dies alles nicht ausreichen würde, tritt Esther Sévérac noch als Solo-Künstlerin auf. Eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, dem interessierten Publikum das Spiel mit der Harfe von einer ganz neuen Seite zu präsentieren.

Esther Sévérac uses exactly the same technique as Ed Sheeran, for example, whose performances are always accompanied by a loop station. The advantage of using such a pedal is that you can spontaneously record a riff, a chordal accompaniment or a hook and then incorporate it into the next song. This gives the audience the feeling that Esther Sévérac has several more musicians on stage.

So nutzt Esther Sévérac exakt die gleiche Technik, wie wir sie beispielsweise von Ed Sheeran kennen, bei dessen Auftritten die Loop-Station nie fehlen darf. Die Nutzung einer solchen Pedals birgt den Vorteil in sich, spontan und ganz individuell Riffs, eine Akkord-Begleitung oder einen Hook aufzunehmen, um die Mitschnitte im folgenden Song einzubauen. So bekommt der Zuhörer das Gefühl, als habe Esther Sévérac noch ein paar Musiker mehr auf der Bühne.
