Who are we dealing with today? Who is the lady doing the honours at the jazz matinee?
Cécile McLorin Salvant was born on 28 August 1989 in Miami, Florida. Her mother was born in France and her father is a native of Haiti. She started piano lessons at the age of five and soon after joined a children's choir. It was this combination that led to her interest in classical music at a very early age.

Cécile McLorin Salvant wurde am 28. August 1989 in Miami (Florida) geboren. Die Mama, eine geborene Französin und der Papa aus Haiti stammend. Bereits mit fünf begann sie mit dem Klavierunterricht und nur kurze Zeit später trat sie einem Kinderchor bei. Diese Kombination führte dazu, dass bereits sehr früh ihr Interesse an der Klassik erwachte.

Cécile McLorin Salvant made the first and important cut in her still young life, when she moved from Miami to Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. There she began studying law and classical vocals at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory.
Her teacher and instrumentalist Jean-François Bonnel carefully introduced Salvant to jazz. She accepted the challenge, occupied herself intensively with the style that was new to her and it didn't take long until her first performances with a band.

Den ersten und wichtigen Schnitt im noch jungen Leben von Cécile McLorin Salvant vollzog sie mit ihrem Umzug von Miami nach Aix-en-Provence im Süden Frankreichs. Dort begann sie am Darius-Milhaud-Konservatorium ein Jura-Studium und eine Ausbildung zum klassischen Gesang.
Ihr Lehrer und Instrumentalist Jean-François Bonnel führte Salvant vorsichtig an den Jazz heran. Sie nahm die Herausforderung an, beschäftigte sich intensiv mit der für sie neuen Stilrichtung und es dauerte nicht lange, bis erste Auftritte mit einer Band folgten.

Then, in 2009, events overtook each other. A series of concerts was followed by her first album "Cécile" - recorded with Bonnel's Paris quintet. Barely firmly anchored in jazz, she won the international Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in the vocal category just one year later.
Her second album "WomanChild", released in 2014, was immediately nominated for a Grammy.

2009 überschlugen sich dann die Ereignisse. Auf eine Reihe von Konzerten folgte ihr erstes Album "Cécile" - eingespielt mit Bonnels Pariser Quintett. Kaum fest im Jazz verankert, gewann sie nur ein Jahr später den internationalen Thelonious Monk Jazzwettbewerb. im Bereich Vocal.
Ihr 2014 veröffentlichte, zweite Album “WomanChild" wurde umgehend für einen Grammy nominiert.

With the subsequent albums "For One To Love". "Dreams and Draggers" and "The Window" (in duo with Sullivan Fortner) she took home the Grammy for the best jazz album in the vocal category.
Now Cécile McLorin Salvant surprises us with a fairytale-like story (not entirely without its dark sides), which she has packed into the album "Ogresse".

Mit den darauffolgenden Alben “For One To Love”. “Dreams and Draggers” und “The Window” (im Duo mit Sullivan Fortner) nahm sie jeweils den Grammy für das beste Jazzalbum in der Kategorie Gesang mit nach Hause.
Nun überrascht uns Cécile McLorin Salvant mit einer märchenhaften Geschichte (nicht völlig ohne die dunkelen Seiten), welche sie in das Album “Ogresse” verpackt hat.

The late Jessye Norman described Salvant as having "a voice like no other, carried by an intelligence and a consummate musicality that makes every note she sings shine through". She says of herself, "I have developed a passion for storytelling and for finding the connections between variety, the blues, the theatre, jazz, the baroque and folk music. So she is an eclectic curator who brings to light rarely recorded, forgotten songs with strong narratives, interesting power dynamics, unexpected twists and humour.

Die leider bereits verstorbene Jessye Norman beschrieb Salvant als "eine einzigartige Stimme, getragen von einer Intelligenz und vollendeten Musikalität, die jede Note, die sie singt, zum Leuchten bringt". Sie sagt über sich selbst: “Ich habe eine Leidenschaft für das Erzählen von Geschichten und das Finden von Verbindungen zwischen Varieté, Blues, Theater, Jazz, Barock und Folklore entwickelt.” Somit eine eklektische Kuratorin, die selten aufgenommene, vergessene Lieder mit starken Erzählungen, interessanter Kraftdynamik, unerwarteten Wendungen und Humor ausgräbt.
