Diamonds are blossoming in Holland, too!

Why, you may ask, did I not decide to invite the Dutch saxophonist to the Jazz Matinee stage much earlier? There is only one logical answer to this: Because I was afraid that Candy Dulfer, born on 19 September 1969 in Amsterdam, had been burnt out for the jazz stage by her collaboration with Dave Steward and Prince. These melodies seemed too deeply rooted in our ears for jazz to still sound credible.

Warum, so mag man sich berechtigterweise fragen, habe ich mich nicht bereits viel früher dazu entschieden, die niederländische Saxofonistin auf die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee zu bitten? Die logische Antwort kann nur lauten: Weil ich die Befürchtung hatte, dass Candy Dulfer, geb. am 19. September 1969 in Amsterdam, durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Dave Steward und Prince für die Jazz-Bühne verbrannt sei. Zu sehr schienen diese Melodien in unserem Ohr verankert, als dass der Jazz noch glaubwürdig klingen könnte.

But 30 years have passed since a guitar and a saxophone told the story of what must have happened when Lily dropped in for a short visit. "Lily was here" was undoubtedly the musical breakthrough for the young lady from Holland, whose father, Hans Dulfer, was probably not entirely innocent in his daughter's musical career. And then "Prince" was the absolute breakthrough for the saxophonist.

Aber sind inzwischen 30 Jahre verstrichen, seit eine Gitarre und ein Saxofon die Geschichte davon erzählten, wie es wohl sich zugetragen hat, als Lily mal kurz vorbeigeschaut hatte. »Lily was here« brachte unzweifelhaft den musikalischen Durchbruch für die junge Dame aus Holland, deren Vater, Hans Dulfer, wohl nicht ganz unschuldig am musikalischen Werdegang der Tochter ist und war. Danach sorgte »Prince« für den absoluten Durchbruch der Saxofonistin.

All of a sudden, they were in the queue of artists who were desperate to have Candy Dulfer and her saxophone in the recording studio. Let's list just a few: Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Van Morrison and Pink Floyd.
Although much in demand as a studio musician, Candy's main focus has been working with her own band, which she formed at the age of 13. The resulting album, Saxuality, not only sold more than 2.5 million copies, but also earned Candy her first Grammy nomination.

Jetzt plötzlich standen sie eingereiht in der Schlange der Künstler, die unbedingt Candy Dulfer und ihr Saxofon im Aufnahmestudio wissen wollten. Nur einige wenige möchte ich aufzählen: Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Van Morrison und Pink Floyd.
Obwohl als Studiomusikerin so heiß begehrt, konzentrierte sich Candy vorrangig um die Zusammenarbeit mit ihrer eigenen Band, deren Mitglieder sie bereits im Alter von 13 Jahren um sich scharte. Das daraus resultierende Album »Saxuality« wurde nicht nur mehr als 2,5 Millionen mal verkauft – die erste Grammy-Nominierung folgte postwendend.

By the way, a not inconsiderable part of the proceeds from the tour that followed was donated to research into the ALS disease in the Netherlands.
The enforced break from music during the coronavirus pandemic was another reason to become even more socially involved.
Candy Dulfer put it this way: "People need music. Full stop! If I can't bring it to them in the usual way, we will find new ways to entertain them and bring comfort and love to everyone. It's what I was born to do and what I will continue to do."

Ein nicht unerheblicher Teil, der aus der nachfolgenden Tournee resultierenden Einnahmen gingen übrigens als Spende an die niederländische Erforschung der ALS-Krankheit.
Ein weiterer Anlass, sich noch mehr im sozialen Bereich zu engagieren, löste die erzwungene musikalische Ruhepause während der Corona-Pandemie aus.
Candy Dulfer brachte es folgendermaßen in Worte: »Die Menschen brauchen Musik. Punkt! Wenn ich sie ihnen nicht auf die gewohnte Art und Weise bringen kann, werden wir neue Wege finden, um sie zu unterhalten und Trost und Liebe für alle zu bringen. Das ist es, wozu ich geboren wurde und was ich auch weiterhin tun werde.«

Candy Dulfer has just released a new album, "We never stop". She will be touring the world with her new band. Her "Music in my Kitchen Challenge" project, in which she revives old classics with guests, is still going strong. She also has a TV show called Club Dauphine and a theatre show called Sax, Candy & Rock-'n-Roll, which is a mixture of live music, stand-up comedy and storytelling. She also produces and hosts a radio show on Sublime FM.

Jetzt hat Candy Dulfer mit »We never stop« ein neues Album vorgelegt, mit dem sie (samt neu gegründeter Band) auf Welttournee geht. Ganz nebenbei läuft noch immer ihr Projekt »Music in my Kitchen Challenge«, bei der mit Gästen alte Klassiker wiederbelebt werden. Dazu gesellen sich der »Club Dauphine« im TV, sowie das Theaterstück »Sax, Candy & Rock-'n-Roll«, welches sich als eine Mischung aus Live-Musik, Stand-up-Comedy und Erzählungen entpuppt. Zudem ist sie Produzentin und Gastgeberin einer Radioshow auf »Sublime FM«.
