Everyone in the Spanish-speaking world who is particularly interested in jazz will be familiar with the artist taking the stage at today's Jazz Matinee. Besides her wonderful voice, she will of course be bringing her trumpet with her. A very warm welcome to Andrea Motis. Also playing are Camerata Papageno, Christoph Mallinger on violin and mandolin and Frederico Dannemann on guitar and musical director.

Wer immer sich im spanischsprachigen Raum für den Jazz interessiert, dem dürfte die Künstlerin, die heute die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee betritt, keine Unbekannte sein. Neben ihrer wunderbaren Stimme hat sie selbstverständlich ihre Trompete dabei. Herzlich willkommen – Andrea Motis. Außerdem geben sich die Ehre: das Ensemble Camerata Papageno, Christoph Mallinger - Violine und Mandoline und Frederico Dannemann - Gitarre und musikalischer Leiter.

Febrero" is the title of the album that Andrea Motis wants to present to us. It is already the tenth album that the Spanish artist has released since the beginning of 2013. Andrea Motis has always been known for her surprises in her arrangements. This time she has taken the Chilean ensemble Camerata Papageno into the recording studio with her. In the musician's own words, the album is a colourful statement of love and happiness that is a celebration of the hot Chilean summer in the month of February.

Das Album, das Andrea Motis uns vorstellen möchte, bekam den Namen »Febrero« mit auf den Weg in den Verkauf. Es ist inzwischen bereits das 10. Album, welches die spanische Künstlerin seit 2013 auf den Markt bringt. Da stets für Überraschungen in ihren Arrangements bekannt, bleibt sie auch nun diesem Weg treu und holte sich das chilenische Ensemble Camerata Papageno mit ins Tonstudio. Die Musikerin selbst sagt, das Album sei ein farbenfrohes Statement für die Liebe und Glückseligkeit, welches den heißen chilenischen Sommer im Monat Februar feiert.

Mrs Motis says: "Through the fine arrangements and the way they're recorded, these songs take me back to the feeling of peace and deep joy we all shared during those summer days in Chile". Febrero" is dominated by music from Chile, Peru, and Argentina. It is rather rare for Brazilian rhythms to come to the fore. It would be an understatement to say that Andrea Motis is in top form here. Calm and always brilliant in terms of sound and musical timing.

Aus dem Mund von Frau Motis hört es sich dann so an: „Durch die feinen Arrangements und die Art, wie die Aufnahme klingt, bringen mich diese Lieder zurück zu dem Gefühl der Ruhe und der tiefen Freude, die wir alle zusammen in diesen Sommertagen in Chile hatten." Dominiert wird “Febrero” von der Musik aus Chile, Peru und Argentinien. Eher selten drängen sich brasilianische Rhythmen in den Vordergrund. Ich wage zu behaupten, hier Andrea Motis in Höchstform erleben zu können. Ruhig und stets brillant in Klang und musikalischem Timing.

Andrea Motis was born in Barcelona on 9 May 1995. At the age of eleven she began performing with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, whose members are also based in the Catalan capital. When she turned fourteen, she was offered to record her first album, which she promptly accepted. The title: Joan Chamorro presents Andrea Motis. Since then, she has gone from strength to strength. Perhaps the recordings made with the WDR Big Band in 2021 deserve a special mention, as this was the first time that she had performed with a large ensemble.

Andrea Motis wurde am 09. Mai 1995 in Barcelona geboren und trat bereits im Alter von elf Jahren mit der Sant Andreu Jazz Band auf, deren Mitglieder ebenfalls in der katalanischen Hauptstadt beheimatet sind. Sie war gerade einmal vierzehn, als sie das Angebot wahrnahm, ihr erstes eigenes Album aufzunehmen. Der Titel: Joan Chamorro Presents Andrea Motis. Danach ging es Schlag auf Schlag. Alle Alben aufgelistet findet ihr auf ihrer Homepage.Dabei insbesondere hervorzuheben wären vielleicht die 2021 entstandenen Aufnahmen mit der WDR Big Band, weil sie dort erstmals im großen Ensemble ihr Können zum Besten gab.

Incidentally, the Camerata Papageno is part of the Papageno Cultural Foundation of Chile, which provides music lessons to more than 1,500 children in more than 70 schools in rural areas. The Foundation was founded in 1941 by the Viennese Christian Boesch. It is a free contribution to musical education in Chile. The name of the foundation was an obvious choice, as Boesch himself often slipped into the role of Papageno from Mozart's Magic Flute during his active career.

Bei Camerata Papageno handelt es sich übrigens um ein Baustein aus dem Gebilde der Papageno Cultural Foundation Chile, die in mehr als 70 ländlichen Schulen mehr als 1500 Kindern Musikunterricht erteilen. Damit leistet die von dem Wiener Christian Boesch 1941 gegründete Foundation einen kostenlosen Beitrag zur musikalischen Ausbildung in Chile. Da Boesch selbst oft während seiner aktiven Zeit in die Rolle des Papageno aus Mozarts Zauberflöte geschlüpft war, lag die Namensgebung der Stiftung recht nahe.

Finally, a titbit from the pen of a music critic who tried to force his impressions of the Febrero album into sentences for the reader, from the realm of trying to express oneself as competently as possible and then only getting nonsense down on paper: "The interpretations of these songs are fascinating and convincing from an artistic point of view. The mastery of the instrumentation, the arrangements and the overall atmosphere of these recordings make the album a pleasure to listen to in one fell swoop.”

Ganz zum Schluss noch ein Leckerbissen aus dem Bereich sich möglichst kompetent ausdrücken zu wollen und dann doch nur Blödsinn auf das Papier zu bekommen.Der Genusshappen stammt aus der Feder eines Musikkritikers, der seine Eindrücke zu dem Album Febrero dem Leser in Sätze zu zwingen versuchte: “Die Interpretationen dieser Lieder sind faszinierend und künstlerisch überzeugend. Die meisterhafte Instrumentierung, die Arrangements und die gesamte Atmosphäre dieser Aufnahmen machen das Album zu einem Genuss, den man in einem Atemzug hören kann.”
