Why I liked the Bee Gees (ESP/ENG)
It is hard to say exactly why I liked this band so much in my youth, as there were many factors involved; it wasn't just about them being a trendy band or having set a new style—though they certainly did that. It went deeper: these brothers set trends with their fresh, irreverent style, radiating both elegance and rebellion. And, of course, what really grabbed people's attention—and stuck in the minds of generations—was the group's ethereal vocal texture, created by Barry’s unique singing style, which had been suggested by their producer. I remember, in particular, that whenever I was shut in my room listening to the Bee Gees, my mom would criticize them, saying they sounded like a box full of kittens. This makes me realize that older generations have always questioned the music young people listen to; however, to be honest, today's music—though certainly not all of it—really gives one pause for thought.
Decir exactamente porqué me gustaba tanto esta banda en mis años de juventud es muy complicado pués eran muchos los factores, no se trataba olamente de una banda de moda, o que hubiesen impuesto un estilo (lo cuál es cierto) pero iba más allá, estos hermanos marcaron tendencia por su estilo fresco e irreverente, ellos irradiaban elegancia pero rebeldia al mismo tiempo y porsupesto lo que más llamaba la atención y se quedó en la psique de todas las generaciones, fue esa textura vocal etérea que tenían gracias a la particular manera de cantar de Barry, lo cuál fue sugerencia de su productor. Jaja yo recuerdo particularmete que cuando yo estaba encerrado en mi cuarto oyendo los Bee Gees, mi mamá los criticaba diciendo que parecían una caja llena con gatos chuiquitos, y esto me lleva a pensar que desde siempre los mayores han cuestionado la música que oyen los jóvenes, sin embargo honestamente la música actual (no toda obviamente) da mucho en qué pensar.
Then came *Saturday Night Fever*, and I remember that one of the first things I did after leaving the theater was to go buy the LP featuring the movie's songs—or the soundtrack, as it is also known. That catchy rhythm was playing in every disco in the city; even though I didn't dance, I would always go with my wife to a famous club called "Le Chat" (French for "the cat"), where they played those songs constantly. We were just discovering disco music, and the Bee Gees were capturing the ears of an entire generation, just as Travolta's iconic, popular dance moves were captivating everyone.
Luego llegó fiebre del Sábado por la noche y yo recuerdo que una de las primeras cosas que hice al salir del cine fue ir a comprarme el LP con las canciones de la película o Soundtrack como también se le conoce. El ritmo tan pegajoso se oía en todas las discotecas de la ciudad, y aunque yo no bailaba siempre iba con mi esposa a una famosa discoteca que se llamaba "Le Chat" (el gato en francés) y allí ponían muchísimo estas canciones, apenas estabamos descubriendo la música disco, los Bee Gees se calaban en los oídos de toda una generación al igual que los icónicos y populares pasos de Travolta.
In short, what I liked most was their versatility and their talent for creating catchy melodies—and their ballads were impressive, too. Who doesn't remember "How Deep Is Your Love," for instance? It is a beautiful melody with lyrics that evoke romance.
En sistesis loque más me gustaba era su versatilidad y su talento para crear melodías pegadizas, y sus baladas tampoco se quedaban atrás, ¿Quién no recuerda por ejemplo How Deep is Your Love? una melodía bellísima con una letra que invita al romance.
