​Hola, queridos amigos. Esta semana volví a mi trabajo y, la verdad, me siento muy contenta porque ya me hacían falta mis pequeños; volvimos con todo. Hoy celebramos el Día del Cuatro, que realmente es el 4 de abril, pero para esa fecha estábamos en Semana Santa y se tuvo que reprogramar absolutamente todo. Esto me dio la oportunidad de participar en esta celebración, lo cual es muy significativo para mí, ya que el cuatro ha sido mi instrumento desde hace años, aunque es ahora cuando lo estoy estudiando en un grado más complejo.

Hello, dear friends. I went back to work this week, and honestly, I’m really happy because I missed my little ones; we’re back in full swing. Today we’re celebrating Cuatro Day, which is actually on April 4, but since that date fell during Holy Week, we had to reschedule absolutely everything. This gave me the opportunity to take part in this celebration, which is very meaningful to me, since the cuatro has been my instrument for years, although I’m only now studying it at a more advanced level.

​Para este día, hicimos la propuesta de realizar una orquesta de papel con los niños más chiquitos y con mis alumnos de la banda rítmica. Quisimos que se familiarizaran con un cuatro real; a veces mi creatividad anda volando, pero la mayoría de las veces, cuando hacemos las cosas con amor, salen bien. Con tiempo, se le pidió a las madres que realizaran un cuatro con material reciclable usando su imaginación y, la verdad, nos sorprendieron. Vimos muchísimos instrumentos hermosos que nos hubiera gustado dejar en el salón de clases.

For this day, we came up with the idea of forming a paper orchestra with the youngest children and my students from the rhythm section. We wanted them to get familiar with a real cuatro; sometimes my creativity runs wild, but most of the time, when we do things with love, they turn out well. Later on, the mothers were asked to make a cuatro out of recycled materials using their imagination, and honestly, they surprised us. We saw so many beautiful instruments that we would have loved to keep in the classroom.

​Con mis niños más grandes hicimos un ensayo previo. La idea era que no fuera algo estructurado, porque este no es su instrumento principal; sin embargo, logré que empezaran a hacer el acorde de Re, que es uno de los más sencillos. Practicamos con figuras de negras para hacerlo más fácil y, con ese solo acorde, logramos montar dos piezas: "Umacapiruá" y "Soy un indiecito". Mientras ellos marcaron el Re, yo, con ayuda de mi cuatro, marqué el otro acorde para darle forma a la canción. Es increíble que lograran tocar y cantar estas dos piezas en solo un día; siento que mis niños ya están listos para ir a otros programas donde puedan seguir desarrollándose.

My older students and I held a preliminary rehearsal. The idea was to keep it informal, since this isn’t their primary instrument; however, I managed to get them to start playing the D chord, which is one of the simplest. We practiced using quarter notes to make it easier, and with just that one chord, we put together two songs: “Umacapiruá” and “Soy un indiecito.” While they played the D chord, I, with the help of my cuatro, played the other chord to give the song its shape. It’s incredible that they managed to play and sing these two pieces in just one day; I feel that my kids are now ready to move on to other programs where they can continue to develop.

​Este Día del Cuatro fue bastante especial porque demostraron —a sí mismos, a sus padres y a nosotras— que son capaces de mucho. Me alegra haber sido parte de este día y regalarles una experiencia nueva que les traiga felicidad. Mañana también estaremos bastante ocupados con un concierto estadal, así que nos vemos pronto. ¡Les envío un fuerte abrazo y la mejor de las vibras!

This Cuatro Day was really special because they showed—to themselves, their parents, and us—just how much they’re capable of. I’m glad I got to be a part of this day and give them a new experience that brings them joy. Tomorrow we’ll also be pretty busy with a state concert, so see you soon.
