El show debe continuar Nuestro concierto del Día de las Madres entre retos y sonrisas|The show must go on: Our Mother's Day concert, amid challenges and smiles

Hola, amigos, ¿qué tal? ¿Cómo están?
​Hoy vengo a hablarles sobre el concierto del Día de las Madres. Para este evento, decidí unir fuerzas junto al programa coral, sumando a nuestros niños de iniciación musical y banda rítmica.

Hi, everyone, how are you? Today I’m here to talk to you about the Mother’s Day concert. For this event, I’ve decided to team up with the choir program, bringing in our music beginners and the rhythm section.

Debido a la gran cantidad de alumnos que somos, no era posible realizarlo en las instalaciones donde funcionamos habitualmente, por lo que decidimos buscar otra opción. Además, queríamos que los niños experimentaran lo que es cantar en un ambiente diferente, pues esto a ellos los motiva y los emociona muchísimo (a pesar de que también puede ser un agente distractor, pero de eso hablaremos en otra publicación).

Because there are so many of us, it wasn’t possible to hold the event at our usual venue, so we decided to look for another option. We also wanted the children to experience what it’s like to sing in a different setting, as this really motivates and excites them (even though it can also be a distraction—but we’ll talk about that in another post).

​Total que decidimos hacerlo en la Cinemateca, pues es un espacio bastante cómodo, no hay que hacer tanto traslado de mobiliario, tiene aire acondicionado y cuenta con un escenario acorde a lo que íbamos a presentar. Para este concierto teníamos un estimado de alrededor de 70 niños, por lo que, evidentemente, era súper necesario un lugar así.

So we decided to hold it at the Cinemateca, since it’s a pretty comfortable space, we didn’t have to move much furniture around, it has air conditioning, and it has a stage that suited what we were going to present. We estimated that around 70 children would attend this concert, so obviously, a venue like that was absolutely essential.

​Pero, como vivimos aquí en Venezuela y aquí todo ocurre, ese día se fue la luz. A pesar del imprevisto, el show debía continuar. Aunque había muchas canciones que ensayamos netamente con el teclado, por suerte pudimos resolver con el cuatro; no en todas las piezas, pero sí en su mayoría. A veces, aunque tengamos la herramienta, cuando no hay un previo ensayo o una seguridad total, es mejor no inventar y arriesgarse a hacerlo acapela.

But, since we live here in Venezuela and anything can happen here, the power went out that day. Despite the unexpected setback, the show had to go on. Although there were many songs we had rehearsed exclusively with the keyboard, luckily we were able to make do with the cuatro; not for every piece, but for most of them. Sometimes, even if we have the instrument, when there hasn’t been a prior rehearsal or we don’t feel completely confident, it’s better not to improvise and risk doing it a cappella.

​Al final no hubo luz y fue bastante tedioso. Los niños se impacientaron un poco, pero eso sí: se portaron a la altura. No destruyeron nada, no derramaron agua y siguieron todas las indicaciones de nosotros, los profesores. Algunos estaban distraídos porque nunca habían ido a la Cinemateca y, obviamente, les sorprendía ver algo súper distinto a lo que están acostumbrados en nuestra institución.

In the end, there was no lighting, and it was pretty tedious. The kids got a little restless, but they really behaved themselves. They didn’t break anything, they didn’t spill any water, and they followed all the instructions we, the teachers, gave them. Some were distracted because they’d never been to the Cinemateca before, and, obviously, they were surprised to see something so different from what they’re used to at our school.

​Sin embargo, se logró la misión. Muchas mamás estaban contentas, los aplausos sobraron y, gracias a Dios, quedamos conformes con lo que se hizo. Aunque en el fondo sé que pudo haber salido mejor, el tema de la luz es algo que se escapa totalmente de nuestras manos.

However, the mission was accomplished. Many moms were happy, there was plenty of applause, and, thank God, we were satisfied with what was done. Although deep down I know it could have gone better, the lighting issue is something that’s completely out of our hands.

​Además de eso, también pudimos lograr que los niños les entregaran a sus mamis el detalle que les hicimos. Ver esa carita de complicidad al darles ese pequeño obsequio a la salida lo valió todo.

On top of that, we also managed to get the kids to give their moms the little gifts we made for them. Seeing that look of joy on their faces as they handed over those little gifts on the way out made it all worth it. ​Sending you a big hug, and I’ll see you next time.
