​El regalo más grande que podemos darles, La libertad de encontrar su pasión|The greatest gift we can give them: the freedom to discover their passion

En un mundo lleno de pantallas y estímulos rápidos, aprender un arte es la mejor de las opciones. Cuando decidimos inscribir a nuestros hijos en actividades extraescolares, no solo estamos tratando de ocupar su tiempo; estamos en la búsqueda de esas pasiones que, en el futuro, se convertirán en su refugio.

In a world full of screens and constant distractions, learning an art form is the best choice. When we decide to enroll our children in after-school activities, we’re not just trying to keep them busy; we’re searching for those passions that will one day become their refuge.

​Puede parecer algo insignificante, y sé que muchas personas no lo ven así, pero a título personal y por experiencia propia, puedo decir que la música ha sido el mayor de mis refugios, tanto en mi juventud como en mi adultez. Cada una de las actividades en las que inscribimos a nuestros hijos tiene algo en común: construir y fortalecer la disciplina, una herramienta vital para cualquier situación o proceso emocional.

It may seem like a small thing, and I know many people don’t see it that way, but speaking personally and from my own experience, I can say that music has been my greatest refuge, both in my youth and as an adult. Every activity we sign our children up for has something in common: building and strengthening discipline, a vital tool for any situation or emotional process.

​El arte nos permite expresar lo que muchas veces no sabemos decir; el arte sabe contenernos en esos momentos en los que estamos a punto de desbordarnos. Y sí, digo "el arte" porque puede ser desde pintar hasta aprender a tocar un instrumento, sin olvidar que los deportes también son una parte fundamental de este desarrollo.

Art allows us to express what we often can’t put into words; art knows how to hold us together in those moments when we’re on the verge of breaking down. And yes, I say “art” because it can range from painting to learning to play an instrument, not to mention that sports are also a fundamental part of this development.

​En estas actividades, no todo es color de rosa, tal como ocurre en la vida. Desde muy pequeños, en la música, el deporte o la pintura, vamos a experimentar emociones como la frustración, la rabia, la tristeza y la alegría. Es precisamente ahí donde reside el momento clave para aprender a gestionarlas. Aunque ellos no lo entiendan —y quizá muchos adultos tampoco—, no los estamos formando solo para ser los mejores. En mi caso, como profesora de música, sé que no todos mis alumnos seguirán el camino musical profesional, pero estoy segura de que la disciplina y la constancia serán huellas imborrables en ellos, tal como mis maestros dejaron en mí un legado y, sobre todo, un refugio al que siempre puedo volver.

In these activities, not everything is rosy, just as it is in life. From a very young age—whether in music, sports, or painting—we experience emotions such as frustration, anger, sadness, and joy. That is precisely where the key moment lies for learning to manage them. Even if they don’t understand it—and perhaps many adults don’t either—we aren’t raising them just to be the best. In my case, as a music teacher, I know that not all of my students will pursue a professional musical career, but I am certain that discipline and perseverance will leave an indelible mark on them, just as my teachers left me a legacy and, above all, a refuge to which I can always return.

​Encontrar una pasión puede ser uno de los mejores regalos que alguien puede recibir. Por eso, siempre aplaudo a cada persona que se ha dedicado a buscar la suya, aplaudo a cada padre que inscribe a su hijo en diferentes actividades para que pueda descubrirla y, sobre todo, aplaudo el apoyo que les brindamos cuando finalmente la encuentran.

Finding a passion can be one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive. That’s why I always applaud everyone who has dedicated themselves to finding theirs, I applaud every parent who enrolls their child in different activities so they can discover it, and, above all, I applaud the support we offer them when they finally find it.

​Todo este post nace a raíz de una publicación que hice hace días sobre mi hija, Sophia, quien está incursionando en el mundo del Flamenco. Aunque no ha seguido mi mismo camino, me enorgullece profundamente ser parte del suyo en esta búsqueda. Si no es el Flamenco, será otra cosa, pero para mí, esta etapa de su niñez es totalmente indispensable.

This entire post stems from a post I shared a few days ago about my daughter, Sophia, who is venturing into the world of flamenco. Although she hasn’t followed in my footsteps, I’m deeply proud to be a part of her journey. If it’s not flamenco, it will be something else, but for me, this stage of her childhood is absolutely essential.
