My Musical Journey | A Glimpse Of A Trumpeter
Music is life they say but wasn't really my thing from the start, I love music, like listening to songs or other people sing while I sing along in my own corner, at times I do wish I have that courage to sing out loud so people can hear me but I have a problem which was how to memorize lyrics, I will rather hum to the song than sing it and if I try to sing, i always sing rubbish, so i just give up on it. At some point, our church need chorister because they were not that much so I joined but as usual, I always sat at the back and make sure I'm absent when it is my turn to lead songs even simple gospel songs, the lyrics are always hard at times.
This went on and on until I decided maybe the instrument life will be my way but there was no way to learn until I join this voluntarily organization (Boys Brigade) and one event lead to another and I decided to learn an instrument (Trumpet). The journey wasn't smooth as I expect it to be because it was really stressful, first process was how to position the mouth and make the first sound, my trainer wasn't take it likely with me and had to give me knock multiple times before I could get that part, then we start with key C which is the first key to learn as a trumpet player and the difficulties there is to know master the key and be able to play the note accordingly, then I try playing small small worship songs like I just want to say etc then from there I move to key G which is the popular one because most instrument play on a key that go with key G on the trumpet.
All it need was continuous practice and also join others to perform for function especially during enrollment service and church programs. Picking the trumpet was really a good option but I landed me my first good paying job when I needed one in school, I wasn't expecting the gig until one of my brothers call and told me my service was needed because they are short of a trumpeter in a funeral home and they had a gig the next day in Lagos so I had to run home that night to pick the necessary things and join them very early in the morning and that was my first time coming to Lagos then so it felt like an excursion, they picked the body and went to the venue to play, it was a 2 days stuff and at the end, I was giving 12k which was a good money back then, the joy in me was really obvious and I had to do good boy so they can always call me when next they have gigs.
Along the line I had to stop because of school since it was a Friday/Saturday job and at times Thursday but one of my lecturer had to put his lectures on those days and he was very strict so i had to leave one for one, been an instrument is always a good option especially if you find it hard to sing but still have interest in music.
