Pop Classics - edition #1- Kool & The Gang

avatar

RockClassics "replaced" by PopClassics - not really😀

Hey Hive community - given I personally come to an end soon with #RockClassics (my definition is until end of 80ies, max 90ies, Rock to me means guitar rocking the most songs) I will start with #PopClassics (same range til end of max 90ies) - which does not mean you should stop using the tag #RockClassics @detlev @alexvan for great content that might be a classic even not matching my personal definition.

I think there are a lot great bands, performers and projects in the broad category of POP, sometimes even considerd as Rock but I have so many good memories about my #oldtunes i never wrote about that do not fit into my personal music categories - so I will start this - POP to me are mainly dance sounds (non Techno), soul, hiphop and general chart breakers from my younger years not matching Rock/Metal/Techno (based on my view).

Starting with Kool & The Gang

Loved their sounds when I went out with early girlfriends and at home when not listening to this Metal stuff. In contrary to low quality music in the charts these days Kool & The Gang always provided great music I enjoyed.

Before we show music some background about these great folks:

  • Founded in 1964 (New Jersey)
  • Founders; Bell Brothers, Robert and Ronald
  • First band name: Jazziacs - The later "Kool" based on attitude of Robert Bell :-)
  • Success started in 1970ies with Disco Funk
  • End of commercial success mid-80ies when lead singer James T left (last success been "Cherish")
  • 1990ies they got back to bit success by touring and Bell brothers produced music
  • But they never got back again - 2004 anniversary was an event with touchpoints as well as songwriter hall of fame things (2018)

But back to positive things - their great music that followed me over 2 decades.

The first one I loved personally was this song:

Steppin Out

First I ever heard and watched a clip in our local TV

Get Down On It

Followed by FRESH:

Since then I researched a bit more - discovered they been active way before the 1980ies (and extended it to the years now).

Found the best party track of all times with "Celebration":

So I decided to buy their music - my personal favourite tracks then been "Emergeny and Cherish":

NEW sounds :-) - so what is that again? The Real one?

Kool & The Gang has influenced the music of three generations. Thanks to songs like Celebration, Cherish, Jungle Boogie, Summer Madness and Open Sesame, they've earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums. Kool & The Gang has performed continuously for the past 35 years, longer than any R&B group in history. Their bulletproof funk and tough, jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled band of all time. In 2020, Kool & the Gang kicked off their animated series Kool TV, chronicling the group's early years growing up in Jersey City.
