Music in schools

I remember my days in nursery school; we did lots of recitation while learning. For example, we converted the days of the week into a form of a song, which goes like this:
There are seven days... There are seven days. There are seven days of the week.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday…

The same progression was also used for the names of the sons of Jacob, which went like this:
There are twelve sons... there are twelve sons... There are twelve sons of Jacob.
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphthali, Gad, Asher... (and the rest).

All these recitations were in the form of music. I remember in my primary school days, whenever I go towards the pre-nursery and nursery classes, it's as if I approached a music department because the teaching of the class teachers towards her pupils is most often in the form of songs and poems.

Poems were my favorite niche in English language study. I loved poems a lot. I still have knowledge of poems I learned over tens years ago. And I believe that even ten years from now I'll still remember them; it's almost impossible to forget them.

Personally, I believe a lot of things I learned during those stages would have been difficult for me if they were not reconstructed into a form of song. Even in senior secondary school, how I was able to memorize the first twenty elements in chemistry was composing music for them.

I strongly believe that music is a very important tool that can help pupils and students in schools. Music is a subject that should be added to the curriculum in schools. Music is like a general interest among people. It's almost impossible to see someone who has no love for music at all. It may not be music of our time; it could be old school music.

I recall an interview Aliko Dangote had with an interviewer. The interviewer asked him if he listens to music. His response was a bit funny, though. He replied to the interviewer, “There's no one that doesn't listen to music. Even Osama bin Laden, I believe when he was alive, also loved listening to music.”

Music is beyond just entertainment. It helps sharpen the IQ of a child. There are institutions dedicated to music only. A school should contain everything that can help in nurturing the talents of every child. Children may have interest in music either in the vocal aspect or in learning instruments; they are all under music.

It's sad that in our schools today, our children's brains are bombarded with what the system wants them to learn and not what the children have an interest in. Most of the things children spend years in school learning turn out to be useless to them later on in the future.

Music is a form of art, and art is a branch of study, both in secondary and tertiary school education. Music education is something that should be introduced to students at an early stage. It is a powerful tool that helps in effective communication.

There is a segment of the brain that handles the processing of music. That segment is also responsible for many other skills. This means that engaging the brain with music helps it balance other skills, which we present it with effectively.
Music plays a vital role in enhancing a child's capacity for reading and comprehension. Personally, this works for me on a high level. Music creates a pattern, which is easier than reading a piece of information the conventional way.

Music aids for the purpose of relaxing the brain. And a relaxed brain is an important state needed for the brain to accept information. Many people, by being educated musically, can come to realization of their potential in the music field. Many people may not realize this potential of theirs if it wasn't initiated to them in the first place.

I strongly believe that music is an important initiative that should be present in our schools. For schools that have already included music in their curriculum, I advise they should continue with it. And those who haven't, I suggest that they should adopt the idea.
