Three Tune Tuesday - Bass Guitar Influences

Hi everyone.

Continuing with #threetunetuesday posts.

Today is time for Bass Guitar Influences.
Often neglected but extremely important instrument. Some 30 years ago I was a typical guitar player with that nasty habit of being the loudest in a band and waiting for that solo part and pose. :)
Then a good friend of mine, also a guitar player, asked me if I wanted to help him and play bass guitar for his Jimi Hendrix cover band.
I liked that idea instantly and that experience changed my view upon music ever since. Ironically, I fell in love with Bass playing Jimi Hendrix covers. (Bass guitars for Jimi's song are extremely funky, fun, would advise any guitar player to play bass with his songs. Everything would improve. Playing, listening.)
Suddenly I heard the whole band, not just a guitar. In time even playing solos was not as important as wish that whole band, song sounds good. Playing Bass is what pushed me in direction of multi-instrumentalist and later producer.
Opened my ears and understanding towards music as a whole.

There are great many great bass players who later influenced me further. As is the case with other instruments or bands, too many to mention them all. I did not have an easy choice to mention only three, but here we go.

Jaco Pastorius.

Probably the most influential, original bass player to ever live. Musical genius.

Weather Report - Birdland

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

If you ever played bass and you did not try to cover that intro bass riff from the track Higher Ground, you missed something very important. :) Amazing musician. A huge influence in a way on how daring he is with performing music.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground

Marcus Miller.

Perhaps a bit less known to the general audience, but among musicians probably among everyone's Top5.. One of Miles Davis soul kids. Top class.

Marcus Miller - Que Sera Sera ft. Selah Sue

I hope you enjoyed reading and listening. Best Regards.

You made a great music choice for today... It looks that bass guitarists are more "team players" and that was the lesson that you had to learn playing it... :)
I like Trenton's funky vibes in the RS shows... It sounds chaotic, but on the other look, it is refreshing, different... 😃

Good choices. Bass is an underappreciated instrument as it can totally change the feel of a song. I discovered a whole world of solo bass players a while back. I feel the bass can have a very vocal quality, especially fretless.

Rock on!

Ya the bass is definitely one of those under appreciated elements in a song - every hears the singer, the drums and lead guitar, but few realise the importance of the bass, take it away and you have flat shitty songs.

That number from Weather Report was great listening, had it on in the background there as I caught up on a few things, real easy listening...

Suddenly I heard the whole band, not just a guitar. In time even playing solos was not as important as wish that whole band, song sounds good. Playing Bass is what pushed me in direction of multi-instrumentalist and later producer.

That's really cool man, and amazing by happenstance getting asked to play some Bass for your friends band changed your whole direction musically..

Jaco Pastorius is unreal, what a talent, and of course I know Flea, as the Chilli Peppers were one of my fave bands for a long time back in the day..
