78 rpm never gets old

Hello Hello Hivians, fellow Hive photographers, Friendlymoose Photo Contest and #FPC enthusiasts!

It's always a pleasure to participate in challenges that are fun on Hive, I think they are what makes this blockchain of ours such a wonderful place. Entering and engaging gives us a community spirit that sets Hive apart from other web3 projects.

This week's theme in the Friendlymoose Photo Contest from @friendlymoose is "vintage" and you can check the contest post here.

For my entry, I've chosen a shot taken by me from inside a charity shop in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh...

This photograph was captured on Friday 18th July 2025
at 11:48 Scotland time with my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL ...ƒ/1.68 ...1/100 ... 6.9 mm... ISO31 In fact all the photographs that you see are all taken pretty much at the same time, give or take a couple of minutes!!

Now I must admit we in Europe have a hugely different appreciation of what vintage is compared to that in the USofA.

I think 78's can be classified as vintage?

I remember as a little boy, certainly younger than 10 when my arse got skelped black and blue from my father. It was one of two hidings I got and I won't forget either of them. It took about a week before I was able to sit down without pain lol!

My crime?

Well I had got into the attic and found his old gramaphone and collection of 78 records.

However I scratched them and broke a few. Boy oh boy he was livid!

78s were pre-vinyl!

And for those of you who don't know let me get gemini to tell you about them...
Seventy-eights, or 78 rpm records, were the primary format for recorded music from the late 1890s to the late 1950s.

They are characterized by their brittle material—typically shellac—and their high rotation speed of 78 revolutions per minute (rpm), which limited them to about three to five minutes of music per side. Because of their fragility, they were easily broken. Their large size and weight made them less convenient than the vinyl LPs and 45s that replaced them.
