Summer Reflection #8: Country Grammar
An unexpected invite came today, to accompany the neighbors to a concert in the country. I don't know the Finnish band (Arppa - folky, jazzy), but it was easy to listen to and was relaxing.
The place is an old farm area with a 100-year old mansion which has been converted into a gallery, and an old, long cow barn, that has been converted into a restaurant and cafe. It sits close to the lake, but is otherwise surrounded by and forest.
The show didn't start until 630, but we got there a few hours early to check out the art from a couple Finnish artists. Not my style at all, but to each their own. There was a single piece that was quite good, but it was so subtle I couldn't even get a decent photo of it. The house itself was more interesting than the art.
I like looking at a wide range of art and don't mind if it is not to my taste, but as long as there is some thought behind it. There were a couple different styles from the artists on display, but I am not sure what I would call the one below.
Clitoral?
This place is about 30 miles from anywhere of note, but there were a few thousand people there. They apparently have gigs a few times a week and the night before there was Eppu Normaali playing, which is an old and very popular rock band here from the 80s. Supposedly, it was packed for the event. I have seen them a couple times before and they are pretty good for a group of 70 year olds.
The venue is outdoors and it was picnic blankets and chairs, as well as standing areas and drinking tables. They had hotdogs, panini, and waffles on offer, as well as plenty of drinks. What was surprising was that despite the drinking, I didn't really see anyone that drunk, which is rare for Finns at a gig. There were also heaps of kids of different ages, and the audience itself was very broad.
It was pretty great.
I am glad that the invite came, as it was a nice relaxing evening, even if quite windy and a little cold. At least it didn't rain at all. I am hoping that this summer is going to have a few more random kinds of events in it that aren't anything too special, but are still "kind a" special because they are rare for us to do. This is a place I would definitely go to again and recommend for anyone who is looking for a pretty chill evening with some friends and music. Though of course, the feeling would have been quite different the night before with a rock band.
And the surprise invite was welcomes.
It saved me from having to start cleaning the basement.

Sounds like the perfect way to pass the weekend, refreshing and entertaining events like this. And you had to take in some of the good-looking art displayed before the main event commenced. Sounds exactly like a thoroughly enjoyable experience since you would love to have such again. Thanks for sharing here. Happy Saturday.
I don't know about good looking art - but at least it was art :D
That piece of art looks like a hidden camera from ancient time. Just joking! It is indeed very special with a lot of work on it. Thank you for sharing!
A lot of work - but was all the work worth the result? :D
At least not something I would hang in my room. I will feel like I am watched 😅
You will clean it sooner ot later 😄 I also delay my house things to autumn😕
I prefer to get it done early so the summer is free - but we were lazy it seems and didn't do it. And now with the garden stuff coming in Autumn, we need to have the space.
How nice your neighbors were
(even if they have bad taste in abstract "art").
That's if you're a good neighbor too.
That thing looks like an alien clock?
The concert must have been 10/10 live pure rock and tasty food 🤤.
They weren't really into the art either. The neighbor has been friends with my wife for 35 years! :D
😁😁😁😁😆😁😁😁😁
You seem to be having an amazing weekend with your daily. It’s really cool
I love those paintings on the wall
Looks good!
I'm always surprised by the diverse crowds that show up to concerts when I attend them. You often see people of all ages even with older acts.
The weird thing with this one was the act was young - in their twenties perhaps, but old people in their seventies were singing along.
Very interesting!
I love the way your weekend is going on well and how you’re spending time with your family
I can’t wait to do that with the family I’d build
What a beautiful evening it was for you and your family listening to the concert plus the house itself is full of art which adds to the interests of the audience. What a beautiful art house!
You definitely had a lovely time at the concert brother wow. It's pretty cool how music is able to bring together people of all ages. The art is just in beast mode right now wow so much beauty and attention to detail
I'm not a fan of abstract art, especially if I don't know what the artist is trying to convey. For the weird figure, I wonder if it is a bear/animal spirit behind a bird to signify something spiritual. I'm surprised to see a lot of people came to see a local band. I guess they're famous.
I still don't understand who buys abstract pieces by artists like cy twombly and pays millions for them. I see them as a waste of paint. But then again so people believe that banana on the wall or white canvas is an art so maybe I should not be surprised.
I was going to ask if the house was pretty, a lot of old architecture is pretty amazing.
Yay for unexpected fun days out :)
I hope that's what they are saying about me and my boys when we're still tearing up the clubs!
Any excuse to save me from cleaning. Literally anything!
Your vacation plans included cleaning your basement? My vacation plans would definitely not include cleaning my basement. Music outdoors though, now that would float my boat. Live music always sounds even better to me outside.
I love that shot of Smallsteps in her yellow jacket, and its placement above the next photo.
