Next weekend, a small group of colleagues and partners are gathering at one of the homes for a games night. This one take a little bit of setup however, as we are diving into people's hearts, minds and pasts - and seeing what music makes up the stories of our lives. However, the main goal is to get together, listen to some beats and have a drink with friends, getting to know each other through a different lens.

image.png

There is quite an eclectic range of people and I think there are four countries of origin that will be represented in the group, so I am not expecting much to overlap. There is also a span of about 20 years between the youngest and the oldest in the group, so that will throw generational difference into the mix also.

However, to keep the grouping a bit tighter, there are ten "genres" that have been suggested, with each participant submitting to the gamemaster who will source the music and play clips of them. We won't listen to all of the songs however, as there will be just too many to get through. There will be scoring in the form of guessing who submitted which songs.

While I can't attach mine here, I thought it might be a bit of fun for a Sunday night for people to add their own into the comments section, and I will vote on those who take the time to think a bit and add song and artist. There are no winners, but there might be some losers ;)

The categories are:

  1. Guilty pleasure
  2. Shitty day song
  3. Song of my life
  4. Must dance
  5. Favorite/best song the year I graduated high school
  6. Worst earworm ever
  7. Play this at my funeral
  8. You make me hot / sexy song
  9. Popular song you cannot stand
  10. Jekyll and Hyde song (your evil alter ego)

I made my list tonight and passed it onto the gamemaster, however it took me embarrassing long and I don't think my list was overly representative of me. One of the troubles I found was that unlike my wife who was able to "get a feel" of the song nearly immediately, nothing came to mind, there was very little feeling involved. this is due to the way my brain works now, not because I haven't ever connected through music - which is sad. Essentially, I had to google lists of songs and genres I know that I like and then listen to pieces of the song to see if I connect with them, or can remember connecting with them. It was a strange experience, but also highlights one of the new limitations I have.

But, that aside, it was also fun to go through lists from the year I finished high school, or a list of songs I might want played at my funeral, though I am not sure if what I chose is fitting. I am guessing that most of us have felt connected to various songs or types of music throughout our lives and at those moments, it might have been very important to us. Reminiscing on the past through the soundtrack of experience might be quite an interesting experiment and could bring a lot of stories to the surface - maybe even some you might want to write about in another post. If you do, drop the link to it in a comment here, if you have also added your list that is. Don't just drop me random posts.

I am putting this into my reflections community as this active exercise is a reflective process that I think most will enjoy, if they take they ride. I do check the community for new content often, so hopefully people will use it for other reflective posts too :)

Right, with a 6am wakeup I am going to try and get to bed a little earlier than I normally turn in, but I will get to the lists tomorrow. As said, this took me far too long, but I wonder how much thought people would put into a task like this and, hopefully people will share a little insight into why on a song or two from their list.

A really nice game and a great way to reflect and dive back into the rhythms of the past.

Now it's late for me too, tomorrow I have an important visit, but as soon as I get home I'll take my time to make the list, obviously this will require reflection and I'll also listen to the songs so I want to dedicate the right amount of time to it.

Good night!

And here I am as promised to draw up my list... I am also attaching the Youtube links since some of these songs, for those who are not Italian, will be unknown.

  1. Guilty pleasure: I don't know why but I immediately thought of a Rasmus song called Guilty, here it is...

  • The shitty day song is one of the ones I love the most but which I often found myself listening to in sad moments; it's from Linkin Park (my favorite band ever): One more light...

  • The song of my life and mine and Reny's, our song is by Nobraino, an Italian group and is called "Film Muto"...

  • The song that inspires me to dance is "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi...

  • The song from when I graduated and that I also brought with me for my first university year is "I'll be there" by Piero Pelù...

  • Here there are many, almost all of Gigi D'alessio, I choose "Quel che resta del mio amore"...

  • 7)At my funeral I would like this which is a new song by Maneskin "The Loneilist"...

    1. Sexy song, "Sexy Lady" by Shaggy immediately comes to mind...

  • Popular song I can't stand "O mia bela Madunina"...

  • this is from Mr Hide and it's a song I love, "Fear of the dark" Iron Maiden.

  • Sorry if I was too long, more than a comment it's almost a post... Ah, special song, my favorite song ever, "The sound of silence" in its original version...

Oh man this is a good one, though I am going not be completely accurate for the high school year.

This was a fun one LOL I've got some good songs here I think! A broad spectrum and one that I think would be kind of fun to do with some friends and coworkers to see what people came up with lol Sad to see no one else has gone through the list and dropped some tracks! Lamesauce! Lol

    1 - Clean Bandit - Rather Be

2 - Flight Facilities - Crave You (Adenture club remix)

    3 - Rameses B - Moonlight

    4 - Flux Pavilion - Bass Cannon

5 - Not quite the year I graduated but in the ballpark hehe. Pitbull - Culo

    7 - Drowning Pool - Bodies

8 - Khia - My Neck, My Back

    9 - Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

    10 - Sevendust - Prodigal Son

Jeez... my taste and breadth in music is sad. But, you have a heavier set than I would have guessed! Though, I suspect that the skate background has a lot to do with that too - as I can imagine these backing clips.

Comfortably Numb is such a nothing song.

Thanks for taking the time mate!!

This took me longer than I expected. Probably because I constantly seek out new music, and it is impossible to listen to all of it all the time (I have probably only a few artists and bands that are played constantly), so I had to go through my long, long playlists on Spotify, and try finding something suitable for this list. And I am pretty sure, that if I would have to do it years from now, it would change or I would remember or rediscover songs that I would fit in the same categories too.

    1. Guilty pleasure - Billie Eilish - OverHeated ( I get a lot of shit from my friends and family for liking some of Billie's songs, but I genuinely think that her latest album was pretty great one)
    2. Shitty day song - Muse - Psycho (This one is just one loud, gritty song perfect for a shitty day or mood)
    3. Song of my life - Gunship, Stella Le Page - Art3mis & Parzival (First of all, I love the video of this song, absolute treat. And why this song for the song of my life? Well, we are all just gamers, playing the game called life and I can relate to the story of Art3mis & Parzival)
    4. Must dance - Michael Sembello - Maniac
    5. Favorite/best song the year I graduated high school - Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit (The troubled kid I was around that time really connected with the darkness and themes of Linkin Park's music)
    6. Worst earworm ever - Adele - Someone Like You (I am sparing you and not linking it here!)
    7. Play this at my funeral - Ghost - Life Eternal (It is beautiful and the right amount of soul and epicenes, I guess, it seems like a great funeral song to me!)
    8. You make me hot / sexy song - Tinashe - Soul Glitch or Dua Lipa - Physical
    9. Popular song you cannot stand - Taylor Swift - Shake It Off (Plux, no! Burn it with fire!)
    10. Jekyll and Hyde song (your evil alter ego) - Fluke - Atom Bomb (Is it evil? It sounds like a perfect song to get in some sort of vehicle with blowing shit up capabilities and well, blowing shit up xD)

    What did I win? :P

    Firstly - you win a vote!! :D

So much I haven't heard before! I will have to run through them in the evening to get a feel for them.

What was the hardest one to decide on?

And I am pretty sure, that if I would have to do it years from now, it would change or I would remember or rediscover songs that I would fit in the same categories too.

This is interesting, isn't it? The songs of our lives change so much depending on where we are in our lives and often, the songs we didn't pay attention to, might take on new meaning once we have a bit more experience under the belt.

    I like Adele... :D

What I noticed with mine is that there is not that much new music on it - most of it is the expected music from my age group. Sad.

I think for you, music is such a big part of your life that it must have been difficult to narrow things to only one (or two) for each category. :)

    Thanks M!

What was the hardest one to decide on?

I struggled the most with the sexy song to be honest. It took me a while to find a fit there since what I found sexy in the past did not necessarily match with now and I wasn't sure there was a song that was truly sexy to me. Most of songs people would think of as sexy to me seem cringe af xD

I almost wanted to post a joke song there, hahaha! And yes, I am aware that some people would actually pick this song as not a joke. I am sorry xD Is meme-like to me.

    I like Adele... :D

I mean, I don't mind her most of the time yet many of her songs are way too overplayed and they get stuck in my brain and I sometimes even catch humming them... for days.

I think for you, music is such a big part of your life that it must have been difficult to narrow things to only one (or two) for each category. :)

That is true. I have always found that some people can name their favorite songs so easily surprising. I don't have one favorite song for anything.

I have always loved the topics and themes in Muse songs. They have always stuck it out for humanity and freedom of human mind. They bring froth conversations most would shy away from as controversial and almost taboo-like. And while not all their albums can always work out as successful or impressive, it does not diminish their past accomplishments.

Heck, people have piled on Mathew Bellamy for years to stop writing lyrics for Muse. But I think, it has made Muse what it is and it would not be the same without his creativity.

Where I absolutely lost any respect for them is their latest song Compliance. That was a bone chilling, Orwellian song that I was repulsed by. Since then I can’t get behind them any longer. Madness is still one of my favorite songs of all time but it leaves a really sour taste in my mouth.

It’s kind of like how rage against the machine used to preach all kinds of anti corruption / imperialist stuff but then was trying to force vax passports to get into their shows. What the fuck? No thanks.

I don't think the song was meant that they (Muse) want your compliance. But:

"Compliance is about the promise of safety and reassurance sold to us by powerful entities during times of vulnerability. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social media algorithms & religions seduce us with misleading untruths and comforting fables. They want us to join their narrow worldview in exchange for obedience and turning a blind eye to our own internal voice of reason & compassion. They just need our Compliance."

I also see that people accused this song being about anti-waxx stuff. I don't think it is. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Music has always been a huge part of my life, so challenges like this are really awesome. I can understand it is hard to pick a song sometimes. I think for me the hardest part would be narrowing it down to just one song...

Guilty pleasure - Anything by Taylor Swift
Shitty day song - Anything by Lana Del Rey
Song of my life - Your the best thing that ever happened to me - Gladys Knight
Must dance - American Girl - Tom Petty
Favorite/best song the year I graduated high school - Sabotage Beastie Boys

Hehe this is fun! Let me have a go at this! I think my genre is predominantly pop.

    The categories are:

    1. Guilty pleasure - Firefly by A Teens - I think most people probably haven't heard this song before. A Teens is a group of young teens (they are old now) that sings many ABBA songs and I really like this song by them because it's so uplifting!

    2. Shitty day song - Bad Day by Daniel Powter - The lyrics were made for bad days and listening to this day makes me feel better!

    3. Song of my life - Stargazing by Kygo, Justin Jesso - I started a personal project a few years back for my life and this song came up on Spotify. And somehow the vibe clicked and I decided to name this personal project of mine Project Stargazing. It's currently in the works and I find myself listening to this song every now and then for motivation.

    4. Must dance - Let's Dance by Five - This is a very old song, probably 20 years ago, and I remembered listening to it almost everyday when I was schooling!

    5. Favorite/best song the year I graduated high school - Graduation (Friends Forever) by Vitamin C - It HAS to be this song for my graduation year! Everyone in the school knew this song and would sing the chorus in big groups.

    6. Worst earworm ever - Friday by Rebecca Black - This wins hands down for the earworm category! For a period of time, this song was everywhere and people were amused over the substance of the song (e.g. lyrics).

    7. Play this at my funeral - Unconditionally by Katy Perry - This is the toughest one because I am not sure what type of song to pick. In the end, I settled on this song by Katy Perry, about loving unconditionally.

    8. You make me hot / sexy song - SexyBack by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland - Justin Timberlake is a very talented singer in my opinion and I thought this song nailed the beats very well.

    9. Popular song you cannot stand - Gangnam Style by PSY - With 4.6bn views on YouTube, this definitely is a POPULAR song. I don't hate the song but it was so popular at one point that I hear it so often and see people do the dance so often until I couldn't stand hahahaha

    10. Jekyll and Hyde song (your evil alter ego) - Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus - This song caused a lot of commotion when the MV was first released because of the amount of skin she showed in the video. I thought she left an impression on me and many people and till now, people would still remember this controversial MV. Skin aside, I thought she sang the song well.

    2. Shitty day song: Linkin Park - Heavy (feat. Kiiara)

    3. Song of my life: Anson Seabra - Trying My Best
