You bet it's #ninetiesfriday! With Goo Goo Dolls c. 1990

avatar

In 1990 I bought a CD Hold Me Up by the Buffalo, NY trio, Goo Goo Dolls. It was their third release but the first time I heard them. I really enjoy the energy on this album and the bass guitar is turnt tf up, which I love!

Unfortunately for me, it was the last good Goo Goo Dolls album :( but it was nice to see the boys hit it big after that.

I recently listened to that album again and it was still enjoyable. If I had to pick a favorite it would be the song Hey.

This song has a punk vibe @geneeverett might like...

But don't judge the album by just those two songs, there are a couple of gems here, like a cover of the Plimsouls song Million Miles Away and a cover of a Prince tune, sung by legendary Buffalo lounge singer and local DJ, LancemDiamond.

They toured in 1991 and came to the university down the street from my house, California State University Fullerton.

Yeah, it's the quad. They played a free show in the quad at noon. To about 27 people (if you count the people walking to and from class) 🎉

I was there with a couple of friends and my trusty walkman with record functionality xD
Yeah, I bootlegged the show :D

I'd get the tape out for a picture but I no longer have a tape deck so in the box it stays for the time being.

They shot their first ever music video for the song There You Are. The way they look in the video is exactly how they looked at the show I saw.

You can check out the whole album on ShitTube, Spotify, Apple, and CD or cassette 🤣

I really like “Iris” and “Slide”… cause I am basic and MUCH younger than you, so didn’t hear their early stuff. 😄

I love the first three Goo records!

They were basically a punk band!
Especially on the first! They credit my favorite eighties punk band (The Descendents) being there favorite band back then! I love those first three records! I own all three on CD and I also stopped there 🤣
This post hits with the vibe my brother! !PIMP

@thebighigg I think we got a winner! @summertooth first #NinetiesFriday post!

Ha, thanks man.

Yeah, I did get Jed after Hold Me Up but I'm just not a big fan of punk. I love the energy and fuckin' the system but the music is too much for me to actually listen too. My girl in high school was a BIG punk rocker, Dead Kennedys,Dayglow Abortions, Sex Pistols... so I heard a lot of punk. I just like my hard rock music more structued and precise. I'll get into one of my favorite bands from the industrial scene in a future #ninetiesfriday post ;)

Sounds goo!

Industrial eh? Is that like Type O Negative sound? Kinda goth industrial sound?

Before it hit mainstream it was bands like Front 242, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, In the 90s it went mainstream with bands like Nine inch Nails, Orgy, Rammstein and such.

I wouldn’t insult NIN by putting them with Orgy 😂
Yeah especially the first NIN record.
All those bands would be soundless without Ministry or Gary Numan. I got what it is. I dated a wild goth chick in college. I’ve been. To industrial shows b4 no doubt. I think she dragged me to VNV Nation. I liked it

These would be considered industrial right? ⬇️
These 3 plates at same concert she took me to in like 2005 I think

Giving ur post a second look and yes I gotta say I do like it!

But I think the melodic alternative or whatever u call it rock of most the record is really good! Actually a lot of punk dudes mention this one a lot as a hidden gem of great song writing.

Ironically I talked today about the Descendents, who was Goo Goo’s favorite band in the eighties. Swing by later! Cheers! !PIMP
