New Thelonious Monk Double LP added to the STACK 🎹

When I was down visiting my oldest a couple weeks ago we walked around town and popped into a cool used record store. Her boyfriend was with us and is a becoming a record collector too, which I enjoy.

I saw a lot of cool records as we were thumbing through the stacks and it was also fun when one of them would come across some record from the 80s and get excited about it. So fun when your kid likes the things you like.

The prices were a bit high at this store but I kept flipping through and I finally found a deal.

It's a double live album from Thelonious Monk recorded in Sweden in 1961 and released on vinyl in 1987. Surprisingly, it was priced at $10 so, before getting too excited, I took a look at the disks, thinking they would be trashed. As you can see in the first photo, they are in pristine condition, so I bought it!

The jacket is in considerably worse condition but this is not an album that I care too much about the cover. You can see in the bottom left someone used a sharpie on it. Also, and this is fucked up imo, the shop put their price sticker right on the cover and it peeled some of it off!!

If I cared more about the cover I would have taken it back. I mean, who tf puts a sticker on an album cover!? Makes me wonder if they ruin all the albums that way or...?

Anyhow, back the music.

Here's a classic from the album that you might recognize even if you aren't a jazz fan.

David Lee Roth did a cover of this in the 80s with a funny video.

Here is a fairly familiar tune...

Let's end on a classic, "Well, You Needn't".

Here's some info for you musicians reading this.

A 32-bar tune in AABA-form that is one of Monk's most popular tunes, and is famous for its chromatically ascending/descending chords. The tune was first recorded on October 24, 1947, for the Genius of Modern Music sessions.

This is classic bee-bop and I love it! I'm going to fire it up right now!

That's funny you mention that because there's a credit to the photographer on the back cover that made me laugh when I read it, I almost mentioned it in the post...
