Let The Black Crowes rock you this #ninetiesfriday :D

Well, it's #ninetiesfriday and today I'm going to talk about a band that put out their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, in 1990 and continued to kick-ass through the whole of the 90s, The Black Crowes.

Their first single from that album was a cover of an Otis Redding tune called, Hard to Handle. I remember the first time I heard the Black Crowes version was seeing the video on MTV. I didn't know the song at time but I was immediately hooked. The music was good and the lead singer (Chris Robinson) was having a blast. I went out and bought the CD shortly after.

Hard to Handle was one of two US singles from the album that went to #1 on the charts, the other one being, She Talks to Angles. A third single, Seeing Things hit #2 on the US charts and a fourth single, Jealous Again, got to #5.

Their second album, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, was released in May of 1992 and went to #1 on the US charts. It also produced four #1 singles, including; Sting Me, Thorn in My Pride, Remedy, and Hotel Illness.

Sting Me was the opening track on the album and sets the tone for this soulful rock and roll record.

Then, about halfway through the album is this barn burner...

I saw them a couple time in the 90s

The first was at a show called the Furthur Festival:

This was a jam ban fest, I was really there to see The Croews though. Bruce Hornsby was good too but the rest of the bands were not my cup of tea. I remember buying a weed cookie off someone in the venue and being surprised they were able to get a box of homemade cookies into the show xD

The Black Crowes third album was called Amorica, and has a fabulous cover.

And of course, being the fucking 90s, it was censored.

Ridiculous!

Once again, the record started off with a rockin' tune that I still love.

Thanks to @geneeverett for coming up with the #ninetiesfriday idea, I know it can be about anything 90s and I'm enjoying re-discovering some music I have forgotten about.

I'm headed out to the coast to day and will definitely be cranking this album on the way.

I’ve never seen them yet. But they are opening up for Aerosmith which we had tickets to see last December but Steven Tyler strained his vocal cords and postponed all shows. It’s been rescheduled for December 28th

They are a solid rock band and really good live as well. I just saw they'll be opening for aerosmith in Portland in November. I may check that out. Tickets probably ridiculously expensive.

Nice! I kind of forgot about them for a bit. Have you heard the double live album they recorded with Jimmy Page where then do mostly zeppelin songs? Highly recommend!

Wow, that one festival would have been awesome. I like the Black Crows as well. Bruce Hornsby was okay I guess. I would have loved to have seen Arlo Guthrie too.

Yeah, Guthrie is a legend, and he was fine, just not a big folk guy myself. Jorma, Kaukonen was the guitarist for Jefferson Airplane, so I really enjoyed seeing him.
