AFRI-INLEO INITIATIVE 35: MUSIC & MEMORY: UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECT🎵

If you are a Nigerian, you will agree with me that one of the constant and most valuable thing that every Nigerian values is music. In fact for many decades, music have been a cornerstone that has helped to define our cultural identity and much more. We have had series of journey of how music have been able to evolved from where it is now. Starting from the likes of Fela kuti, sunny ade and now we have the likes of Davido and WizKid. Several of their music have always been played in ceremony like weddings and many more.

But I personally have come to discover that music is beyond the entertainment. Don't get me wrong, music offer that entertainment touch for us. But when it comes to the world of music, it goes beyond the entertainment aspect. Music offers that connection that is deep with memory.

Music have always been a carrier of wonderful moments and memories in our lifes. There is a way you will just listen to a particular music and it will rise up within you a memory that is years ago established. What do I mean? Take for instance if you listen to music in the 1970s in our present world, there is a way it will spark up amazing moments and memories back most especially when and if you live in that era. There is actually some music I listen to right now which sparks memories of my childhood days even though it has been after many years.

In my little experiences, I have discovered that why music always have this deep connection with memories is how our brain is been programmed to accept music. Like many of us know, music is made up of good sounds and those sounds always have a way it resonate with our minds most especially in cases whereby the music comes with good lyrics or lyrics that stay within us or probably when you are listening to the music and it seems to align with what you are passing through at that particular moments.

In the medical line also, my research makes me understand that sometimes music is used for therapy tools most especially when it involves cases of mentally unstable people or loss of memory. There are times when music can help you in memory recovery and so music is used in therapy majorly to heal our body and most especially our mind. Medically, they even make use of music to help patients who are suffering from dementia or from patients that are suffering from loss of memories.

Thanks be to technology that have rapidly advanced and now music can be access with ease compared to many years ago. You can stay in your house and listen to any music of your choice ranging from the aspect of boomplay, Spotify and apple music. You can have access to any music of your choice. Not only that, we now have loads of events that have really helped to even increase the bond of music with memories. There are some events you will attend and based on the music they played there, it has a way of sparking up memories of years ago actually.

Overall as I conclude, I will say over the years, there have been a very strong connection with music and memory and in fact has just gotten much more thicker as the world keeps evolving. Most especially in a country like Nigeria where I come from where music is part of our cultural identity, I will say music is the foundation sometimes on which memories are even been established and sustained.
