Monday Drum Day: Believin' in yourself

This is yet another bit of drumming from a Drumeo student collaboration piece. I am just not sure I will get around to recording the whole song before the deadline that is in a couple of days.

The song is Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. It is unusual in a couple of ways. There is hardly any drumming in the first minute of the song and when it does start the technique is unusual. Most drummers cross their arms to play the high hat and snare as it just tends to work well. For this song you uncross them as the right hand has a lot of work to do around the kit.

You cannot really see it on the video, but you may hear that the bell of the ride cymbal gets lots of attention. Using that and playing 'open handed' are both new to me. I just recorded some of the patterns used. It gets more complex as the song goes on and I may not be totally up to full speed.

I have enjoyed the challenge of playing this anyway. Learning a new technique is always useful. I had some hopes of recording the drum part and even adding the guitar solo as that is not a particularly hard one, but I may have to do that some other time.

I have been doing various lessons on Drumeo lately. There was a 'workout' specifically for this song, but I have to slow it down a little. I also had another rehearsal with the band where I took the kit. I really need to work out what I need to get ready before our big gig. Better cymbals and drum skins are on my wish list.

Rock on!

That is pretty interesting. You would think it might be an easy song, but apparently not!

I have a real appreciation for drummers since I started playing. There's a lot going on in most songs and I hear it more now. I'm impressed by how much the Drumeo community does. I think I need to give up the day job just to keep up :)

Haha, Maybe just wait until you retire! You need that day job to buy the equipment!

I love your drum set. What is making that guitar sound aside from the drum?

No guitars playing there, just drums.

It is a fact that unless a person believes in himself, he can never succeed in life.

Great that you are learning new tricks on the drums my friend, and as they say, practice makes perfect.

I don't expect perfection, but I am happy with improvement. I try to play something each day and I can see it is working. It is an exercise for both mind and body.

Just do your best. After all, some will win, some will lose, some are born to sing the blues.
