Monday Drum Day: Folking it up

avatar

Although I have been drumming for over a year I have not really played with anyone else apart from early on when I took my little electronic 'drum mat' to a couple of sessions. In the jazz/swing band I have been playing with in the last couple of years (Swing 42) I have played guitar and ukulele. I did play some djembe at a few gigs, but did not always take it. Now @daniellemurray has started a new band (name not finalised) that will be more about folk music, but with rock/pop leanings. Think The Waterboys, Bellowhead or The Pogues. I said I was up for doing some drumming.

We were meant to have our first rehearsal last month, but several people were suffering from COVID or other bugs. We tried again this week, but were still missing several. @anna-newkey stepped in as guitarist and singer. Danielle plays clarinet and recorder whilst Bob (not yet a Hiver) plays flute and piccolo. They are both using effects pedals for more sound variety.

Setting up

I have my new Roland e-drums, but getting that set into the car and setting up elsewhere would be a major undertaking. I had pondered selling my Yamaha DD-65 portable kit, but it may be ideal for this scenario. I thought about using the basic footswitches it came with, but the kick pad and pedal is much more usable. I 'borrowed' a doormat to put that on from the hall as it has spikes to stop things sliding around. I had my high hat footswitch, but forgot the adaptor to plug it in. That meant the high hat was always open, so I had to use other option to keep the beat. You will also see my ukulele and my tablet mounted on the microphone stand. I packed most of my gear into a large suitcase with wheels as drumming gear tends to be heavy.

We had a fun few hours trying out some songs. We need to experiment with arrangements to see what works. I hope we will have @purplesinger with us to play piano and sing next time as well as a bass player.

I did not record any music, but Bob did. You can hear the tunes the others already posted here and here. I think we are already sounding like a band. Having played together a lot before we can pick up tunes fairly quickly.

I kept the drumming pretty simple. I think you can hear the sticks on the rubber pads as well as the output of the amplifier. That should be less of an issue at a gig when we would be more amplified.

It was really good fun and they seemed to like what I was doing.

Stay tuned for more.

Wow, it has been a year already? Look at you go! This is really awesome. I am glad that you found this group where you can hone your skills. I'm going to check out those other accounts you tagged too.

I've introduced a few of my fellow musicians to Hive. Maybe more will sign up. We're out to have fun with our music.

It did all sound pretty good!
I still have to listen to all of the recording.
Really enjoyed our afternoon!

I'm open to feedback an what I can improve on. We can always learn something new.

I heard a quote about music should be fun as you 'play' it, you don't 'work' it.

That's a very good quote!
Trying things outside our comfort zone is not a bad thing though and you're doing pretty well with that.

Nice...

I really wish I could commit time to learning an instrument fully..

I once tried keyboard but inconsistency had the better part of me. Same for the bass guitar...

I hope to go back to the keyboard and finish up the learning process cos I love music a lot. I intend to have a studio in my house

Music can be enjoyed at any level, but you need to dedicate some time to it. Depends on what else you have going on.

This sounds like a fun way to inspire what you are learning in the drumming course.

Since drummers are in back of the band, I wonder how that will feel when performing considering that as a guitarist you would have been closer to the audience.

I don't mind being at the back. I'm just happy to be playing.

Drummers might be at the back, but they are the most important part of a band, maybe in line with a bass player; both have to provide a steady beat and keep things together.
There are lots of drummers who connect with their audience even from the back of the stage.

Agreed. A couple come to top of mind: Don Henley and Phil Collins.

I felt some of the old energy of Swing 47 come back, but instead of me relying on your rhythm guitar, I was relying on your drumbeats. Great fun!

You seem to be quite excited about your drumming experience.

Keep drumming with your pianist friend.

You could have had a head start years ago with the Rock band drums. I am seeing similarities. Do you use sticks on this?

I never played those games. I use sticks, but you can play with hands. My high hat foot switch is for Rock Band. It's better than the one that came with it.

My wife reckons that the music sounds very peaceful. Well done on the drums there.

Cheers. Some tunes are a bit more up tempo. We need some variety in the set and want to offer something different to other bands.

Well, I think that you guys are on the right track, especially with the variety of instruments. Nowadays it is mostly computer generated music.

There's still lots of more traditional music being played. There's a big folk scene here.

Sorry for the late reply Steve, but we are battling with power cuts.
Glad to see that you guys still have a big folk scene over there and all of the best with the band.
