Jazzing on a Sunday afternoon

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

Yesterday our little jazz group got together again at London Road Studios in Baldock. It has been a while since we did this, but we meet up at some pub jam sessions. The studio time is when we can work a little deeper on some tunes.

The band is me on drums, @daniellemurray on clarinet, @purplesinger on piano and Bob (no Hive yet) on flute. Unfortunately our potential bass player has not been able to join in yet due to illness.

We have the room for 3 hours and these are just a few of the tunes we played. You will hear extracts of The Man I Love, Misty and Night & Day. I was playing a mix of brushes and sticks. I have not been playing much jazz drums lately as I work on some Drumeo courses and I am also doing a bass course. Luckily I seem to have retained some of the necessary skills, but I could do with more practice in this area if we ever get some gigs. For now it is just for fun and we play at some open mics with friends. There is the potential for some local festivals, but that may be in a different form. Danielle and I may even revive @swing47.

It was good fun and the time flew by. I've had a bad back recently, but that did not trouble me and my dodgy hand was okay too. Music is a cure! I was using the studio kit with my snare and cymbals. The new skin on the snare helped with the brushes.

I may post up some bass playing soon, but I am very much a beginner at that. I play because I enjoy it.

I found an old jazz and blues cd in my collection, put it on yesterday, and this cd is proper, proper jazz, kind of jazz that makes you smile and go 'WTF' it's great! Boop beep boop bauh wauh beep boop

Nice man!
There is nothing like a good jam session @steevc 🎷🎸.

I was playing my guitar in the sun in Sefton park today with a few friends. I've been struggling with health issues the last few months, but it was too nice a day not to do something outdoors, and as you allude to in this post, music really is a healing force.

I hope you're back feels better soon m8 👍

Hope you are improving. My back is better today. I think we all benefit from these sessions as you can forget about other stuff for a while and have to concentrate on the music.

Maybe we need to play outdoors some time. That has a different vibe.

Yeah, I'm with you on that SteevC. I get that forgetting it all feeling when I'm writing too, and also when I'm out somewhere away from the city in nature. But playing music is one of the most powerful ways to merge with something bigger than yourself 🎸😀

We are mostly sticking to classic stuff. Nice chords and melodies, but I just have to do the rhythm.

Very nice! The classics are some of the best. "In a Sentimental Mood" is one of my favorites.

We've not done that one yet. Some of these tunes are a century old, but are still great.

My friend has been building his studio, bought a laptop, a sound card and two monitors. I would like to hear his records ;)

I loved this, a lovely jam on this fine Tuesday. I guess you all practice the pieces individually and then come together to play in unison?

Well, some people may have practised certain pieces, but we were just calling out tunes from a big selection. I have not been playing much jazz stuff lately and have to figure out what will work. We are all fairly musically experienced and so can 'wing it' to some extent. If we are going to do gigs then we need more intense practice and rehearsal.

Very nice sound. I have played Misty since I was young. Enjoyed!
