Going to Drum School

avatar

I started learning to play the drums about a year ago. These days you can find free lessons for just about anything online. I found there are loads of drum lessons on Youtube. I followed a few teachers there to get updates. Of course they would be trying to sell courses and lessons as they have to make a living.

Something that came up a lot was Drumeo. This is something bigger than an individual teacher. As well as a permanent staff they have lessons and courses by loads of professional players, including a fair few I had heard of. They post lots of videos on their channel such as this one.

A few years back I paid a subscription to Artistworks for the rock guitar course by Paul Gilbert. I did that for over a year and it was pretty good. As well as a series of lessons you could submit a video of your playing and Paul would do a video response where he would give you personal tips. I had quite a few of those and you could view all the videos he had done for other people. I would recommend it and they have many top players teaching other styles and instruments.

I had decided to pay for Drumeo as I liked the look of what they were offering. I was going to wait until Christmas, but then they offered a big discount for Black Friday and I went for it. Even at normal price it is about $20 per month and that would not even pay for one lesson with a teacher.

There is a whole course on there that takes you from the total basics through to complex techniques. I am working my way through that, but will look at other parts too. I think it just helps to have some structure to your learning. You can dive into all sorts of things, but it does help to learn the basic techniques first.

They have transcriptions of thousands of songs that you can play along with. I need to explore that. As with Artistworks there is a facility to submit your videos, but I have not figured that out yet.

One thing I had not realised when I signed up is that I also get access to their other schools for piano, singing and guitar. I will have a look at those too when I find time. I could certainly use some tips on singing.

I will be reporting on my progress. I will post some videos of what I learn and probably some of me playing along to their backing tracks. I will be trying to do something from the site most days, but I think I can easily get my moneys worth.

They do provide a link to share with friends to get a month of free access. I can only give out a few of these, so let me know if you are interested. People I actually know will get priority.

I am interested to hear if others have experience of this or other online music schools. I may also look into getting in-person lessons with a local teacher some time. I think that can have value too. I had years of classical guitar lessons as a kid, but then the web did not exist then. I have had other guitar lessons and some for singing.

Rock on!

They cover a lot more than Phil as you can see from their videos. They provide tab on all the videos I've seen. I'm going to immerse myself in this stuff and hope I soak some of it up.

Yes, yes and yes.
After guitar, drums are my favorite instruments.
And Phil Collins is one of my favorite drummers. (For example, that drumming in Tears for Fears, Woman in Chains.let alone his own works in Genesis or as solo artist...man..perfect.)

He's had quite a career. I saw him live a couple of times and it's a shame he can't play any more.

That's a bit of a trek from here. It would be fun to have a proper kit, but it might not make me popular at home.

That is pretty awesome. I like the one that the guy actually gives you personal feedback. That is crazy. I have tried to do the tutorials that Fender has a couple of times and even the basic ones are too difficult for me. I know it probably just takes practice, but I am pretty impatient :)

The rock guitar one was good and Paul Gilbert is such a cool guy. Getting tips directly from him was awesome.

I will see how it goes with this one. They seem to cater for all levels. I was looking at their song transcriptions are some are labelled as advanced. I will be looking at the simpler ones for now. Plenty there to keep me busy.

I've signed up to a lifetime membership for Pianote and got singing and guitar as well, but it will end after a year. Is yours not time limited?
Anyway, an excellent platform that I have used a fair deal over the last few months;
lovely staff and a community to join and learn from.. Highly recommended!
Good luck with your drumming; I do think, that was their first section when the company got started, drumming.

I just paid for a year so far. The lifetime package was $1200, which is a lot and I saw something about that offer ending soon.

What are the singing lessons like? You could post about your experiences with the school. The guy who founded it is a drummer and I think it's been going for maybe 10 years. I only really heard of it when I started looking at drumming videos.

We'll have to discuss it some time in person and you can give me some guidance on what is there.

My lifetime was around the $500 mark if I remember rightly, so that seemed fine; I prefer one-off payments, monthly subscriptions can get costly.
I've taken away warm-ups and techniques on singing vowels, chest and head voice and such like. I like it, because with the videos you can repeat it as often as you like, you don't get that with a teacher..
I tend to forget what people tell me, so repeats are vital.. 😄

I did the Fender Play program for a year, that was pretty cool but moved a little slow for me. It was a great way to get reintroduced to my guitar after a really long break though.

This drum site sounds pretty cool. There are a lot if great ways to learn music online now.

We are spoiled for choice these days. It's changed so much since I was a kid.
