Beer Saturday: Open mic, parkrun and some chilling out

avatar

I have not done a #BeerSaturday post in a while. I was in a pub again this week and had a couple of beers. My friend Ray ran an open mic at the True Briton in Arlesey. We have played there before, but it has changed owner and we need to establish a relationship with the new landlord. This was on Thursday and it was not too busy in there. I think we had seven musicians. @anna-newkey was also there along with a few old friends plus a guy I had not met before who did some great songs including an original.

I started with a Neck Oil. They did not have any hand pumped ales unfortunately, but this is an interesting brew with a funky pump. Note that the beer links may force you to 'prove your age', but I do not see how entering a date of birth stops anyone as you can type what you want.

Neck Oil

Local legend Rod (of the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band) did a fun set on his ukulele. I was playing my own (smaller one) for my first set. Unfortunately my voice went a bit as I played a mix of Johnny Cash, Radiohead and one of my own songs.

I also had a Hobgoblin Ruby which was on special offer. This is another very distinctive beer. The glass was a bit odd. Short and wide with a big groove around the bottom. It says 'Beauty Lies Within' on the base.

This morning I was helping out at parkrun. The weather was not bad, but it gets a little chilly when you are standing around rather than running. We did a bit of shopping and I stocked up on some new books using vouchers I got for Christmas. I shall report on those as I read them.

This evening we watched Bank of Dave on Netflix. This is a feel-good British film about a guy taking on the financial establishment to help his community. It is based on fact. I am not sure how much was fictionalised, but it includes a performance by Def Leppard. We made burritos for dinner and I had a Madri. This is one of a number of beers we seem to have accumulated over the last few months. It is not what I would normally drink, but was nice enough.

Madri

Tomorrow I hope to do a long run. It is warming up a little, but I will probably avoid the mud. I had better get to bed so I am well rested.

Hope your weekend is also good.

Beer and playing together. Sounds like it was a fun evening. I love the sound of Hobgoblin Ruby. I doubt I'll find that in Japan, but I can keep my eyes peeled.

It's pretty cool to meet someone who hung out with the Beatles. He still plays some of the Bonzo's songs.

never really got into the beatles, found it a bit like todays plastic pop. Too manufactured for the masses

I think they were more authentic than that and they evolved over their career despite a lack of formal music education. They put in the time performing to learn what people wanted. Music was changing all the time back then. Even now there is so much variety if you look beyond the charts, which I don't even look at.

As I said, it wouldn't be my first choice. I expect my son bought it. He has yet to develop good taste in !BEER.

It can be more about just getting drunk. Been there and done that. Now I want to enjoy it.

We get that Neck Oil down my way, but it usually costs a pretty penny in the pub! I've also seen Madri pop up here and there… although never when I was in Madrid

I think the Neck Oil was £4.70 with the Hobgoblin a bargain at £4. I do wonder how the pub makes a profit when it's not very busy.
