A new community to talk about your recording gear and I have a new toy

I thought there was a need for a community on Hive that talks about audio production. I did find one, but it has been inactive for a long time. I will keep maintaining this one and set up some moderators to help with that.

I am purely an amateur at audio work, but these days you can set up a home studio for not too much money. I really am the definition of 'all the gear and no idea', although I have done a fair bit of recording. I hope I can learn from other Hivers. If you are not sure what type of posts will be acceptable then just ask. I would say it is not the place to share your music unless you are using it as an example of production techniques. Other communities will find a bigger audience anyway. I want it to be a friendly place, but spam and abuse will not be tolerated.

I just upgraded my studio with a new audio interface. The Focusrite 4i4 gives me extra inputs so I can record various instruments at the same time. My old M-Audio was passed onto me by @stav and has served me well. I will try to find a new home for it.

Interfaces

One issue with the new interface is a lack of physical controls. You have to enable various settings via software and Focusrite do not provide a Linux version. Luckily someone has done the job for them with this application. I learned about it via the very useful Linux Musicians forum that I have been a member of for many years.

Scarlett GUI

It may look complex, but it is basically about routing audio between various places. I am still getting to grips with it all. So far I do not have it working with the Ardour software that I use for recording, but I will ask around about that. I have recorded with other applications and had my drums playing through it.

I tend to deal with physical instruments rather than software-based ones, so the interface is a vital piece of equipment for me. I need to get the sound into the computer so I can manipulate it. I have various audio effects that come with Ubuntu Studio, but I have a lot to learn about how to make the most of them.

I know there are some popular music applications on Windows and Apple, but I prefer to stick with Linux for various reasons. I think the tools I need are available. I have seen people get great results with them and I will do some posts about what I use.

I will tag @stickupboys and @epodcaster as people who may be interested in the new community. Feel free to spread the word. I know some Hive communities are primarily about curation and rewards, but this one is about sharing knowledge.

Rock on!

What a fabulous idea. Will be interested to know more about it. There are a lot of musicians here on Hive and recording is a big topic that people have experience with or want to learn more about. We need more knowledge based communities here.

I would quite like to see people just go through what gear they use. We can learn from that. Nothing like a bit of 'gear porn', but we want to be informative too.

Happy to join in with this community, I’ve got stacks of software and only the bare essentials for hardware.

We can discuss software too. I'm up for having a broad range of topics.

Oh, going to following this! I dabble around with small editing stuff in Audacity and just have a little recorder for life music (can't even remember the name of the thing!). I'm always amazed by the magic that those people in the recording booth are able to do!

The way we see a lot of communities working on hive at the moment so if there is a separate community about it that would be great for people who like songs etc a lot. and wants to learn more about music. And music is something that every human being likes to listen to.

Glad you found a space where you can share your work and learnings. I can't really contribute here but I reblogged to help spread the word! Good luck!

That's really cool. There are a couple of guys in the Bro community who do this sort of stuff along with stickupboys. I found an old soundboard in my server room the other day. I might need to share some photos with you sometime.

We've got plenty of people doing audio production of varying kinds on Hive, do I hope it can be an active community. It should cater for all levels.

I think it's a great idea to have this type of community too on Hive, obviously many people like to talk about audio and record

YaY! One of the reasons I've been so hesitant to share guitar stuff. I've discovered I suck at sound production. Looking forward to these posts for sure!

Awesome!, I though (because of the cover picture) it was a HamRadio or DXers community, it would be great too!

Those would be topics for a different community that someone else could create.

Feel free to chat about that kind of stuff on hive.blocktunes.net!

We actually have plans for @groove-logic to do some Logic Pro X videos and such for beginners and more advanced producers too! Just trying to get back on track with some things first.
