When the band said they wanted to add Smooth Operator to the set, I thought, “oh cool, that’s a popular song. People will like that.”
Then I first sat down to learn it and listen I said, “OH FUCK IT HAS A BASS SOLO.”
This video footage features the song, “Smooth Operator.”
A tune from last month’s performance on Oct 5th 2025. This band, “Jazz Derelicts” likes to perform once a month. I’m glad. I like having time to practice the songs, learn the original bass parts and study the written parts before I get to the gig.
How many pop songs have a bass solo? WTF?
I was angry. I was hopeing to kick-back a little a enjoy a little less preparation time.
Nope, opposite.
Instead, learn a rare bass solo part people might actually remember, rigth? Would people konw if it was missing? I guess I could have bailed out and asked one of the horn player to covert the part… maybe the piano guys.
This song was huge. Super popular and Sade might be one of those artist and almost everyone likes. You know, like the guys in prison like some of the same music no matter what. I think Sade would secretly be one of those. Not interested in finding out.
The recorded bass part, not the solo, is simple and feeling good type of rock bossanova pop music loves.
Fresh 90’s music again, right? It fits this band. I like the singers song selection. We might do a Donna Summer song soon. The rest of the band is scared. They think “SquibCakes” is easier.
