Suddenly MORE Big Band Part 1 Oct 28 2024

avatar

Happy October 28. I’m officially in two big bands and suddenly someone asked me to join them for a Tuesday rehearsal. That’s tomorrow.

(Little did I know, there would be much more after THAT!)

First, get through tonight. I have rehearsal with the regular college band featured in the videos I’ve been sharing.

Currently, I’m jumping in the car and making my way to Monday nights rehearsal. For this final rehearsal, we will be in the theater. They call it a sound check. It’s a nice theater and there’s a full PA, but I don’t think the sound department/live audio technicians get paid. There’s plenty of bureaucratic nonsense. Plenty of paperwork and sign up jargon... However, when it comes to finding a sound person or two to manage theater equipment at a potentially profitable event, it’s a fail.
Where’s all the money?

Would it be different if they found oil under the buildings? Lithium battery minerals? Race card time?

Somehow schools aren’t expected to be professional. If they were a professional situation, there would be monitors, electricity, zero trip hazards, more of assemblance of the actual performance environment, and better lighting. I already know the stage will be completely different when we actually perform. I’ve already been tricked this way several times. I already know the partitions you see behind my base and amplifier will be different. Someone will either put them too far forward or too far back. It’s gonna sound completely different at the rehearsal and I’ve learned not to expect much. Thankfully, most of the other musicians are older than me and they’ve also learned to expect the mediocrity I’m describing, correction bureaucratic scholastic mediocrity. The professionals among the band will know to simply trust in their abilities and have big ears. The older musicians know that we do all this training and all of this forgiveness so that we can be flexible on the battlefield… I meant to type “on the night of the performance”.

🥸

This is considered a sound check/rehearsal.

We have a final concert this Friday.

Glamour:

In the image above, we can see my amplifier on top of a new amp-stand, my chair with the music book on top, and my bass with its very comfortable strap and perfect A-frame stand.

In the image above, we can see congas, parts of the drum set, and a piece of sheet music for the percussionist to read.

View from the stage. I’m usually the farthest back. Not to hide, to aim bass at the guy in the farthest corner of the horn section.

Bushy is as bushy does.

Previous Performance Videos

You’ve probably already seen these videos. I recently shared them in separate posts.

I made these videos for family. I’ve already shared these videos separately in previous posts. It’s all me visually, but you can hear the entire band. Three videos, each with two songs, private on YouTube. Hopefully the link is available for a long time.

NEXT POST

Look for Part 2!

“Suddenly MORE Big Band As A Sub Part 2 Oct 29 2024” long post titles are 🤪

Tomorrow night, I’m suddenly subbing for a bass player in a big band that’s been around for a while. I was just chilling at home and suddenly the phone rings. It was a trumpet player from various big bands I’ve played in over the years. He asked me if I could sub at his Tuesday night rehearsal. He probably got my number from a guy in a recent new situation/big band (with a singer).
