FIRST, this video features footage from an outdoor performance on October 21 2025. The follow-up video will feature the same song, but 10 days later and at an indoor concert on Halloween, October 31 2025.

This BassCam video features Count Basie’s song titled, “The Kid From Red Bank.”

This is a song from 1958 we are playing. Count Basie is famous for the piano playing in this song. He plays interesting parts by holding onto two or three notes that the chord changes have in common. He creates tonal illusions and then also creates rhythmic illusions by initiating those shared notes in some unexpected places and for tricky lengths of time. He also injects one or two notes throughout, just to tell you he knows that you might be thinking he is lost. Non-verbal communication is like magic.
I see pictures of Count Basie and he looks like a nice guy, but he has an occasional side-eye that probably melted some players.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT THIS SONG IS FAST AS FUCK!!!

The chart reads 280bpm. My nice little quarts metronome stops at 208bpm. Most seem to top out at 200bpm or close. I know tricks around this. I’ve spent lots of time with the metronome. Long car rides, walks on the beach, and hot showers. I buried that click deep deep yah. Made it vanish.
Fast, song is fast. My job is to not get lost and to maintain the pulse. The horn section tries to drag it down. Drummer knows to fight them (rhythmically) because I've warned him about it in the past. I also fight him (rhythmically) and actually yell if I don't hear him fighting them/maintaining good pulse and feel.
One more comment about going fast. You learn the chord changes better. Probably the notes also. The fast song demands that you learn to process familiar info in a shorter amount of time with the same efficiency and outlook. One mistake and a humpback whales dies.
